Is it possible to use the circled area as a turbo oil return? i believe its the crank lock/locating pin hole.

I think the oil return is best in the oil level. You may not want the oil returning somewhere exposed to windage.

The oil return needs to be above the oil level to operate properly. See any oem turbo return ever built.

To the OP, I would be careful pulling any bolts that may be physically needed by the bottom end. Is that your engine or is yours still in the car? If yours is out, drop the pan and pick a location.

Oops, my bad. I would have thought all the windage going on in there would be a negative for oil to return to the pan without getting thrown around everywhere or even possibly getting locked up in there due to possible pressure in the area. Also thought that retrurning in the level would have a flow path through the system.

Its too small, and if you drill it out that block is literally worthless if you need to do the timing belt. Because thats how you align the crank at TDC.

Thanks guys, two engines on stands at the moment, 2.0 with spun bearing out and 2.5 crate engine waiting to go in. Thought it would be prudent to arrange the oil return instead of messing about when I do decide to do it while the engine is out.

I think the best option in this case then is for me to just weld a 90 bend into the top of the sump, although welding old sumps isn't something i've done before !
