NB - VVTurbo build

Hi.
My name is Sérgio, I am from Portugal and I am starting to prepare my new to me 1.8 VVT engine, to be turbocharged.
It's the first time I am doing this, and even with all the research I've been doing, It would be great to have the knowledge of the members to guide me in the way.
I am documenting the project on my Youtube channel and I will share the progress in this post.
Thanks in advance, and I hope you guys enjoy this process.

Hi.
I've made some progress and go further in the project.
Any help is welcome.

Cylinder Head Ready to Go

Love seeing such videos, was curious for the next one already. Little surprised by the lack of replies really.

Appreciate you doing most of the work by hand instead of machining by shops that might take months or a hefty budget (sorry American friends, parts of Europe are rough sometimes)

Keep it up and am looking forward to seeing how this will perform.

Thank you for your message. I am not aiming to a crazy amount of power, so I believe that the work done by hand it will be good enough. I will be happy with about 200 / 220 WHP. Let’s se if it happen. I am concerne my turbo might be a little to big 😅.
Maybe the people are tired of this MX5 turbo builds, or my videos just suck 😂😂😂. I don’t care, I will keep doing them and sharing with the ones that want/need/like to see them.
In the next one the bottom end and the cylinder head will be torqued in place. At least that is the goal.

Please keep making videos, they're well done from what I watched and if nothing else, entertaining to see work being done to a BP engine. I just tore down my spare engine for a forged rods and maybe Supertech pistons rebuild plus other upgraded parts. I'll be paying to have the block cleaned up, honed, and resurfaced minimally for a fresh headgasket sealing surface. The oil and bearing surfaces looked great, normal wear for 56k miles. Since my engine will be going into a 28k mile, 2004 Mazdaspeed MX--5 with ~28k miles I'm also having the head refreshed and resurfaced. 300 WHP is my target, or whatever I can safely tune for with the GT2560R. It's been running 11-12 psi for the last 12 years so 270+ WHP should add some excitement.
:wavey:

That is already a big number. What is your plan for the gearbox? If this build goes well, the plan is tu use it and get better driving it around track, and after a while go with forged internals and increase the power.

I'd say it's been running 225-240 WHP for a decade with the previous owners, quite a few track races and some autocross with no transmission issues. From what I've read, the 6-speed is good to 350-400 practicing mechanical empathy. There's also a modification that's supposed to lessen the chance of failure (4th gear? Circlip mod?) that you might be interested in researching. Mine is mainly street driven and the tuner just added 2 degrees timing to the 12 psi row, quite a nice power increase but still only 11-12 psi. I think my transmission will be fine at 270-300 WHP as I don't plan on clutch drop, drag race starts or shifting as quickly as possible to shave split seconds off my race times.

Hi.
Today I clean a lot of stuff in the ultrasonic cleaner, gapped and installed the piston rings, drilled the oil pan, manufactured and welded the accessory for the turbo oil return line, and more.
Hope you guys like this.
We are really close to starting the engine assembly.

goforit 09-26-2022 04:50 PM

Hi.
New video on the channel.
In this one, I assemble the main components of the engine.
Crankshaft with new bearings, piston with piston rings gapped cylinder by cylinder, head gasket and cylinder head torqued in place.
Hope you guys enjoy it, and it can be somehow useful.

goforit 10-06-2022 04:22 PM

Hi.
The old 1.6 engine is finally out. We are one step closer.

goforit 11-04-2022 01:52 PM

In this video, I assemble the camshafts, check the clearance, and time the engine. Hoppe, you like it and it can be helpful.

goforit 11-04-2022 01:52 PM

Hi. New video at the VVTurbo build series.
Today I did the final assembly of the engine in the stand.
The list includes:
Intake manifold, throttle body, exhaust manifold, engine mounts, water pump inlet flange, crank pulley, water pump pulley, alternator, turbo oil line, knock sensor spark plugs, coils, and more.
I hope it can help you.
We are really close to having it back in the car. 🤞

goforit 11-09-2022 01:41 PM

Hi guys.
The engine is finally in.
Flexplate, flywheel, clutch, gearbox, starter motor, and then engine in place.
I start to see the light at the end of the tunnel 🙂

Nethawk 11-15-2022 08:42 PM

Quality videos, keep it up! Hopefully your 5 speed holds up for track use. I just sheared the teeth off of 3rd gear in my NA 5 speed at about 220 whp. That was after about 10 track days at the power level.
