need a cheap clutch

Since I'm on a tight budget I need a clutch that can hold over 200 hp thats cheap. I'd like to stay with an organic clutch. I'm also not sure if i should stay with the 1.6 flywheel or go with a 1.8. I can get either flywheel cheap at Advance Auto Parts ($38)

$38 for a flywheel? Hmm.. People here have had various luck with the ebay units. Personally, I'm saving for an ACT and I will probably go with a 1.8 if I can find an inexpensive flywheel. I don't know which ebay unit is best, but it would be nice to get some collection of experiences.

I attempted to purchase one of the advance auto flywheels. It was a special order item, alleged to come in a couple of days. I waited about 2 weeks before getting a refund.

BTW, it was like $40 + core charge.

since it's a GRM challenge car: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/XTD-S...01209617QQrdZ1

I bought my ebay clutch from the seller "gripforceclutches". Its the same price as the one brain posted, but it is all clutchnet parts. It held up perfectly to the 200whp i put down.

go with the ebay clutch for 220 or so whp it works just great. with abit of lightening etc that will make for a real quick miata.

Here are a few other ones I was looking at. Has anyone tried these?

Gripforce F1 Racing Stage 1
$104 shipped

EZ Racing Stage 2
$179 shipped

eClutchMaster $199 shipped

Exedy Racing Stage 1 $239 shipped

timhill78 04-16-2007 02:23 AM

I have a ez stage 2. I haven't got to a dyno but it's holding 10psi on a 1.8 so far. It slipped a little while back but it turns out that was from a oil leek from my CAS. After I fixed that it hasn't slipped.

neogenesis2004 04-16-2007 07:12 AM

I have the gripforce stage 3 to be more specific.

Pseudosport 04-16-2007 03:06 PM

Sorry to keep throwing more options out there but has anyone used a Centerforce I or a Luk Pro Gold clutch?

neogenesis2004 04-16-2007 03:09 PM

You want to hold over 200whp though, I don't think any stage 1 clutch is going to do that for you. Stage 1 is generally just a slight upgrade from stock. The gripforce stage 3 is only like $170 shipped. Thats a bargain price for what you get. Its all clutchnet components sold at wholesale price.

+1, gotta maximize that budget ;)

Yeah thats the one I'm leaning towards. I'm just checking out all my options. Now do you have the 1.6 or the 1.8 clutch?

neogenesis2004 04-16-2007 03:37 PM

I have a 1.6 personally. I'll tell you what though. From my experience with the clutch so far I'll tell you that I will be buying the same thing again when I build my FE Dohc. Thats how confident I am in it.

Just beware that daily driving with it will take getting used to and ample pedal finesse. It does chatter when creeping forward slowly. So the best idea is to let whoever is in front of you get a solid car length ahead and then just let the pedal out quickly and shoot forward and clutch again quickly and let it rol the rest of the way. Kinda gay, but its cheap and it holds the power with ease.

Braineack 04-16-2007 03:42 PM

i drove it, it's not bad, just gotta get used to it.

VRTSid 04-16-2007 03:47 PM

dont get a xtd, gluck :)

magnamx-5 04-16-2007 04:14 PM

F1 racing FTW man for real.

guitarrc6 04-16-2007 04:38 PM

ok so heres another question. should he get the 1.6 clutch and flywheel cause its lighter or the 1.8 cause its stronger? and would it be worth it to use a 1.6 lightened flywheel and clutch kit? I'm assuming this would save a decent ammount of weight vrs the stock 1.8 setup so his engine would rev up a lot faster?

magnamx-5 04-16-2007 04:51 PM

just use the 1.6 for as long as it needs to work and your power gaols it will be more than adequate.

Ben 04-16-2007 05:19 PM

I would get the 1.8. I'd rather rev inperceptively slower due to higher mass than potentially slip and loose power.

I think that goes doubly when looking at discount clutches that may not hold up as advertised.
