Need help identifying turbo
7 Attachment(s)
Ok so i was looking for a ball bearing turbo, I found a ad on the local craigslist (may have been a mistake?!?!?) so i talked to the guy and he said he got this turbo on a trade for some srt4 parts, Suposibly it came from a kit for a cobalt ss. Well i asked for some numbers to see if i could google it to get more info. unfortunetly there is a lack of numbers or anything i can make out. the previous owner was told it was BB, when i inspected it there was no play and it was a little stiff but glided nice (didnt feel grainy or rough) i took the gamble and gave the guy 300. i got it to my buddies house first thing we realized was it was missing the inducer and turbine hold downs, no big deal maybe some one was trying to clock it? We seperated the exhaust side to find what looked like shavings on the impeller, it didnt make any sense thoughm there was no play and it didnt look like it rubbed any where. it pretty much looked like a new turbo. we came to the conclusion that maybe this was ceramic coating from the painting of the CHRA? im guessing someone just sprayed the center section and didnt bother to cover up the impeller? i cleaned it with some brake clean and its coming off but its getting grainy and sliding under the seal plate? so now i need to clean that out some how. the big question is did i get hosed? is it ball bearing? what is it? it is oil cooled and water cooled, seems like its restricted on the oil side which im sure thats only on BB turbos right?

sr20 t25.
edit: no last pic makes me think its a t28. |
do you think its ball bearing? why would they have sprayed the impeler with ceramic coat? i was thinking about trying to clean the fins with some break clean and a toothbrush? thanks for the reply!

It's weird because someone has welded a round fitting on the compressor side. Makes me think it had the nissan t25 3 bolt adapter there originally. The cartidge looks like a journal bearing.
|
would a journal turbo be restricted in the oil inlet like you see in the pic? i dont think my super 60 is, i think its wide open. it was definitely was a 3 bolt flange on the cold side discharge, i can see where some one grinded the ear off. im thinking t28? and from all the pics of the chra it looks the same, its just missing the id tag, it has the rivet where the id tag was, i cleaned the exhaust side a little more with a tooth brush, i need something to dissolve the paint though.

yeah i have the same turbo SR20 T25
i have the restrictor there |
is it a ball bearing or floating?

i have the restrictor there except I bet you $10 your T25 doesn't have those bolts holding the compressor housing to the back plate. http://www.boostedmiata.com/gallery2...larst25001.jpg this is the SR20 T25....it uses a circlip to secure the compressor housing. The OP's uses bolts...that makes me think it was a t28 and a 60mm compressor wheel. its journal. its pretty easy to tell it you have a BB turbo...even like oyu have it now the wheel should spin easy, like roller blade wheels. If journal it wont really keep spinning. |

from looking at google images of the gt28rs chra, it looks like mine
http://www.himni-racing.com/images/G...%20GT2871R.jpg http://www.himni-racing.com/index.ph...products_id=41 im looking at other images. but it all looks the same. i checked out the godspeed one like you have dustin but it looks like the godspeed only has oil? http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...bohardware.jpg http://www.sr20-forum.com/forced-ind...ato-turbo.html you can see a weird like "A' mine has a similar stamp like this in the chra as well. |
A is for AiResearch.
MY journal T3 has the same. http://www.boostedmiata.com/gallery2...rebuild010.jpg under red paint. |
I agree it does look like a 60mm compressor, any luck with using the serial number there stamped into it to find some info?

The grit on the turbine wheel looks like gummy oil engine death muck. If it was on an engine that died... sad chance turbo took damage also. Beyond that... I suck at identifying turbos :p |
ok so theres a number on the exhaust side, 449010-1, from research it seems like its closest to a gt2554rs, anyone else agree?

why would you think its not a ball bearing? i cleaned off all the paint and i can get the wheel to spin pretty good with little force, alot easier then my super 60 journal bearing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jHMtaqtNRg If it acts like that then you have a ball bearing. |
