Default custom mid mount intercooler?

searched couldnt find anything..... Ive seen the over the rad intercooler setup and im not a fan. Has anyone ever ran a mid mount setup like the 240 guys with like a smaller custom rad to fit the intercooler piping by? Or put the intercooler on the backside of the rad and put the fans on the front and had them pull air instead of push air?

No, the optimal placement for a miata intercooler is in the front bumper with pipes going around the side of the radiator. The only other place the mount an intercooler is V-Mount which requires a ton of body work and then proper ducting.

Smaller radiators don't work on Miatas.

The only other thing I can think of is a side-by-side setup.

We also seem to have more issues with cooling, so decreasing the size of the radiator isn't a great idea. Other layouts you see in other cars might not be great. Johnwag(?!?!?) had a setup with a narrow radiator and pipes that went straight past the middle of the radiator.

Coding paradox had a setup like that. IRRC it was an auto-x only car.

Yeah I've seen that side by side setup that's why I'm confused on how you can run a half rad but no ones run a slightly smaller rad so your intercooler piping can fit past the rad making a mid mount setup or anyone have any experience with running the intercooler on the backside of the rad?

No, you dont want to heat up the air when it goes through the IC...Why would you want to run it behind the rad anyways? Like what is your logic behind this question?

The thermal dynamic properties of water/air of a radiator allows it to still work behind a intercooler. The air/air properties of a intercooler does not work behind a radiator.

What if you were to put it in the big open free flowing area of the front of the car. In front of everything but the bumper. I read somewhere that there is a level of efficiency up there with a few bucks spent on ducting. Saw a guy do it at a car show.

Are you just trying to be different? They will call it the, over heat sleep-er

I think you should just cut two holes in the hood and route the piping through them. Then just mount the intercooler on your hood so it get really fresh air AND does not block the radiator. No one has ever run that set up so it would be really different and I bet the reduction in your field of vision would be minimal.

At 8-9psig supercharged, temps got into 200F or more. Putting an intercooler behind the radiator will render it completely useless.

I'm changing my setup to a bottom mount intercooler as we speak.

I got a large used intercooler off of one of our pieces of construction equipment that I will mount between the frame rails underneath the transmission. Here is pic ($20 bill placed on it for size reference). It will be large enough to never need fans to keep the charge air cool.

Could always move the radiator to the roll bar and run a big intercooler where the radiator sits.

Good idea for a rear mount.

Run the trubo in the trunky, pipe through the hole around the tank there put hte IC behind the Roll bar and then run the pipe in the center like a t top.

Side mounted radiator with scoop. Front mounted intercooler.
