As you can imagine, this is probably the most commonly asked question on this board. As that's the case, you can find all the information you're looking for by using the search function. Turbo'ing a Miata is a piece of cake, but you've gotta understand some basic concepts. Very little of your knowledge of large displacement V8's translates into small forced induction 4-cyls.

Do yourself a big favor, stop posting unless it's a thread to introduce yourself in the Meet&Greet forum. Seriously, no more posting for at least a week.
Come back to this board every day for an hour or so and read every single post. In that amount of time, you'll learn just about everything you need to know in order to ask good questions.

To put it bluntly, there is no cheap way to make good power on a Miata. For quality parts, it'll take about $800 to make 150whp. It'll take about $2k to make 200whp. It'll take about $4k to make 250whp. But you can't just bolt 250whp onto a stock Miata... things like tires/suspension/safety/etc... all need to be ironed out as well.

So, no more posting. Lots more reading. Start new post in 1-2 weeks time and ask good questions.

Hey Tyla, you didn't insult me. The purpose of this forum is not to spoon-feed NOOBS. I was trying to give you the tools so that you could learn this stuff for yourself. Just like most automoive forums, there are things called "STICKIES" at the top of every page. You clearly haven't read them. There are also forum "SPONSORS"... you clearly haven't visited them to see their products and learn exactly what parts are out there for turbo'ing a Miata. You probably haven't even Google'd "TURBO MIATA" to see what websites are out there.

Imagine for a second I went to your Malibu forum and said this:
"Hi guys, sorry for the noob post, but I just got this sweet Malibu. Doesn't handle so well, but I think I could use some more power. Can anybody recommend an engine... not too big an engine though cause I my friend already has pistons for me and the pistons are very small and I only want a "little" more power (like only 200whp more). Can anybody recommend an engine without pistons to buy??? How much power can I get on small pistons? I already know everything else I'll need, like gas and oil. Don't worry though, I'm 17 and know everything."

See how it's pretty clear I don't even know enough to ask good questions. If you're really interested in wanting to turbo your Miata, then listen carefully.
STOP POSTING.
START READING.
COME TO THE FORUM EVERY DAY FOR ABOUT A WEEK AND READ EVERY SINGLE THREAD/POST.
START ANOTHER THREAD IN 1 WEEK AND ASK GOOD QUESTIONS.

And just to show you I'm really interested in helping, I'll actually answer your questions:
Boost on a stock motor depends on the motor and the tune. Assuming a healthy motor, you start seriously lowering engine life in the 280whp range. How much boost you need to get there depends on the turbo. A "small" turbo will never get you to that kind of power. A T4 will get you there no problem, but will never spool in time to make usable power. What is considered "small" to a muscle-car guy would still be huge to an import guy. The 12b Mitsubishi turbo came stock on some Saabs and Volvo's about 20years ago. It would be ideally suited for a low 200whp goal on a small displacement 4-cyl such as a Miata. However, no aftermarket company makes a manifold or downpipe that can utilize it's funky proprietary flanges.
A 30whp goal is not achievable on a 1.6 using standard bolt-ons on any sort of realistic budget. It is generally given that the Miata's stock exhaust and intake are very good pieces and you stand to gain around 10whp or less on a full intake/exhaust setup on a 1.6. Even the most basic bare-bones turbo setup running about 5psi is good for around a 50whp gain. Timing/injectors/intercooler and what not depend on your approach to boost. Knowing what approach to take means you have to be smart how Miata's work stock... and you won't learn that unless you start reading and searching.

lol.....this was ******* great! And 100% true in every way!

Hey man, go to the Meet and Greet section, and de-noob. Show some pictures, talk reasonably, and try not to ramble. Read, learn, post, and you will be welcomed.

Congrats on the Miata, Malibu's are for ladies, wait.....

OMG you are 17!

Do yourself a favor and take samnavy's advice. Your lucky he responded to your question. A lot of the guys here wont care unless you went and posted in the meet and greet. No body here is talking **** or putting you down. Your taking it the wrong way.

Here read this: https://www.miataturbo.net/forum/showthread.php?t=4288

Even if you read this before then read it again and again. When you go to sleep read as a bed time story, when you wake read while you eating breakfast, when your watching cartoons read it again. Print it out even and read it while your driving your miata. READ TILL YOU MEMORIZE IT!.............Psssssstttt then come ask questions.

Yea man it doesnt matter if ur 17 or 71, same rountine...I'm still a noob and I've been here for 2yrs+, and have a turbo car...

Some very knowledgable people on here who have answered ALOT of the same noob questions, and even posted writeups on what/how to do almost everything. Purpose is to share info AND not have to answer the same question 10000000000 times..

I still get caught asking questions that have been discussed many times...may be new to YOU, but not to the forum...

Just think of it as tough love, teaching a man to fish, etc.... Anyway, read, check out the SEARCH feature (up top), and you'll find prop all your answers...THEN if you dont understand, get stuck, etc. it becomes a greater effort to help you out...

Anyway, GL and have fun!!! And welcome!!! (rude fuckerz didnt even do that!)

I told you in my 2nd post exactly what a 12b was good for.

And as I have said, I wasn't being mean. I was and still am trying to help you. You need to read and search and read and search and stop posting until you know enough to ask good questions. YOU DON'T KNOW ENOUGH ABOUT MIATA'S YET TO ASK GOOD QUESTIONS. This is not mean, it's designed to help you not make any more stupid ******* posts. I AM TRYING TO HELP!

wow your still be hostile to a 17 year old kid. ha well your mature. but either way i take what you say as constructive critism. but your still just a waste i will not post on this anymore. i have somehow made you mad?

no one held a gun to your head and made you read or reply to my post. so stop crying. and i might not know alot about miatas. but i have fixed a few things on it. and i know how cars work. its simple car

On top of that how do you expect me to learn anything. When i ask people who know and they have to go and yell at me for it. they put a string on it so you can pull it out. just stop i have done nothing to you .

Man, seriously.. How many times does Sam have to tell you hes not mad at you? Hes not being disrespectful to you. Hes ATTEMPTING TO HELP YOU!

Seriously.

Seriously. Really. Seriously. Read the ******* stickies. How old you are, what you know about cars, how fast your mothers station wagon is.. None of it matters. What matters is your posts asking questions are worthless at this point in time because you have not read the relevant information. Pretty much every question you've asked can be found in a sticky or the "USEFUL POSTS" section.

Here:

https://www.miataturbo.net/forum/showthread.php?t=10821

Read that Right now. Thats all the info you'll need to know about turbo + miata. Really, Serious.

https://www.miataturbo.net/forum/showthread.php?t=71

That thread will teach you some terms to use, so when you're posting questions about what you've learned from the previous HUGE HUGE HUGE HUGE thread, you won't get flamed again.

Most of the people on this forum are more than willing to help you, but you have to take responsibility and R E A D First, ask questions second. However, I would imagine almost EVERY question you need is likely found in the first thread link, or by using the "SEARCH" feature at the top. After using those two features if you're still confused, or still need further help then would be a good time to post. At that point in time you'll be properly educated on WHAT and HOW to post to achieve your answer.

Oh, and I swear to god... If you ask anything related to installation of a Rotary engine in your Miata I'll personally come to your house, kick down your door and slap the everloving silly **** out of you. No. Just, No.

Good luck, and God Speed.
