New turbo installed, YIPPEEE!!!
I suppose most of you know at least a little about my ongoing build progress.
My original Frankenturbo just didn’t work out… so I bought a used .80/.64 SR20det turbo and have had it in for about 4days now. It required a slight mod to my intercooler piping, but otherwise fits just like the old one. Here’s how it’s working: 1. No more boost overshoot. I’ve got my ebay MBC set at 10psi… and it holds a steady 10psi from about 3300rpm’s to near redline where it drops to just about 9.5psi. Formerly I had as much as a 4psi overshoot. I’m using the same wastegate actuator. 2. Since the bigger compressor flows more air per psi, I know I’m running leaner. I don’t have that constant stink of raw fuel anymore. It still smells a little on startup, but even running catless, once it’s warm, no fuel smell. I think since I’m using less boost, but flowing more air, I’m not running as rich anymore on the top-end. 3. It’s loud… much louder than the other turbo, definitely moving more air. The car sounds like it’s a lot noisier in general. Lots of new creaks and rattles under hard acceleration. 4. Power delivery is virtually unchanged, except there’s A LOT MORE OF IT! I mean there’s more power now at 10psi than I was seeing at 16psi with the old setup. I don’t event think I’ve sacrificed any spool time. I’m still starting to spool under 2000prms and hitting full boost by 3500rpms. 5. No more clutch slippage. I was having clutch slip issues on my old setup at around 180ftlbs on the 240ftlb rated clutch. But I was having that issue at a relatively low 4000rpm’s at around 16psi. Now that I’ve lowered the boost, I’m pretty sure the torque curve has moved to the right, making peak torque later in the RPM range and for some reason, the clutch likes that better. I’m extremely pleased with the current setup. I broke it loose in 2nd this morning going around some traffic… never got it loose before at 40mph… scared the shit out of me. I need to get an LC-1 here in the next paycheck or two to see where I stand on the fuel. I’m gonna leave it at 10psi for now, but I think with some timing adjustment, 12psi is doable on the 310’s, and then I’ll really be in need of a new dif. -Sam |
get that junx on the dyno!
and post your freaking first plot! |
That's great news!
|
Nice, the turbo works fine then?
|
Better than fine. It works so well (and is so clearly superior in every way) that I'm gonna steer people away from the .48/.49 DSM turbos. It's what I should've done in the first place. Wideband is in my near future... after I've done what I can with that, it's dyno time.
|
Great!!!
Same turbo for me but with a hks manifold on a 1.8 NB. If yours spools at 2000 rpm, I wonder at what rpm will spool on my Nb 1.8...:) |
hey spamnavy , now You have the same turbo im running lol, only diffrence is you have your ic done and over with......I need like 400 bucks and a week off work to get this crap done :( , I still need to get my dumpipe made and IC Piping done, but work keeps taking my time ahhh, maybe I should rent a welder and pipe bender to do this shit
|
Good deal man. You might want to twist your mbc down a bit until you get that wb installed. 6 psi is still fun, right :ugh2:
|
stock wastgate actuator on the sr turbo is set at 7psi, cant go any lower than that
|
well whatever dude. 7 psi is safer than 10 psi when you're tunning by guestimation.
|
yes that is correct . nothing to fight over
|
Thats my turbo also. I too am happy at 7 psi. I don't plan to get on the dyno until the summer, so I am very interested in your results.
If the Spec holds up I may try the "stage 2 plus" for myself. |

Dyno that sucker |
I bypassed the MBC and will run on wastegate alone for the time being... maybe. I lit'em up in 2nd a few times today just getting on it hard.
I'm working the WB magic on the wife... she's gonna hate the idea of me haulin ass around with her laptop on the passenger floor. |

Just focus on one thing at a time man. Once the turbo is in, then start getting the boost set to what you want it at.
|
In reply to Rican's post:
Damn it, if it weren't for the constraints of time and money, I'd be rich and bored. |
That's one way to solve boost control problems. :bigtu:
Good to hear lots of positives from the switch. I haven't followed this SR20DET turbo...is it a T25? |
Very nice Sam. Your also ahead of me. I would be done by now but I blew my 1.6 so I just swaped in 1.8 which set me back alot since I had to buy a new manifold and downpipe. But I'm shure I'll be much better off with my Begi manifold, FM downpipe and my SR T25.
|
Yes, the SR20DET turbo is a T25.
Sounds bad-ass to me. The new turbo is better in every way! |
