Next Catfish Engine Build
I'm building two engines, actually. #1 is a 1.8 NA8 that will be replacing the NA6 in the Catfish now. The car will be going back together, cleaned up and will end up in Seattle. Not exactly roadster weather, but I'll be putting seat heaters in. :)
The turbo is for: 1999 engine Supertech springs and +1mm over valves 84mm 9.5:1 pistons forged con rods polished crank Happy Meal and light weight flywheel Exhaust TBD 700cc Deatschwerks injectors IC setup The logical choice for an all-around turbo seems to be the T2560. My question; what setup would make you think about using something else? How about a GT2835 with .63 A/R and a V-band exit? Or a GT3037 with a .63 A/R? Or...? |

oh man this sounds like it will be a hoot
I'd skip the dw's and go with ID's. also turbo choice will depend on power goals. I highly doubt anyone is crazy enough to really need something bigger than 2560 on a catfish, but who knows. it would be either gt2560r or efr6258 IMO. If you want a fancy garrett I'd look at the gtx2863 or something, with a tial housing. |
EFR6758: for doing rolling burnouts in 1st through 5th of a 6-speed.

I'm building a mild NA8 engine and putting on the same 2560 Churbo system on it. Boost will be turned down, and seat heaters added. It will probably also end up being the first car with a full width windshield. |

These are not Churbos, and the "X" models have actual Garrett CHRA's. None are internally wasted, and the default among all are V-band mounts for hot-side connections. Now that the toy box is open, what do you bolt to a mildly modded 1.9? Here's the caveat; I drove home from Laguna Seca wishing that the 22 year old 1.6 had been fun and REALIABLE for the whole weekend. If 300whp can be reliable with a fully forged engine, then that's what I want. |

here's what I think...
This is a tough crowd at MT.net, and you'all are afraid to voice an opinion because it will immediately be shot down. Don't fret, as I've already made a decision....BUT, I wanted to know what you'd put in your own car.
Remember, this is a track-oriented build, and not a dyno or drag queen---did I just say that? :) The one thing that I'm grappling with is the fact that this build will happen without an internal wastegate. In performance terms that should be good. In terms of fabrication, that brings up questions. |
9.5:1 seems a touch high from what I've been told. 8.6:1 seems more popular. Also, if you want to consider running E85 you might up the injectors to 1000's and throw in a DW 300. Looking forward to seeing your build up. Your goals and mine are very similar.

Luckily 300hp equals about 6:1 horsepower to weight ratio--even counting my lard ass--so huge horsepower isn't so important. edit--BTW, I found out today that my engine builder lost my Happy Meal... |
I'd go with a bigger turbo and less psi for a track car. Thanks for the T shirt at MRLS!

Probably because the selection he has to choose from most are cooler newer designs of that turbo.

GTX2867R and low boost because you bought the wrong pistons.
Smaller turbos that would spool faster need to make more pressure to achieve the same power but make more heat. You can't handle as much heat because you chose a higher compression piston. Therefore your car will be a slower spooling compromise. For a serious car, I would use the 2867 at high boost with the lower compression pistons. And if it was track only, i'd consider e85. |

There are turbos available with T3 mounts too, which means that some off the shelf manifolds would be avaiable GT2835/GT3071R with GT2835 T3 GT3037 GTX3071R using a GT3037 T3 GT3076R using a GT3037 T3 GTX3076R using a GT3037 T3 GTX3576R using a GT3582 T3 etc. (much bigger available..) |
oh c'mon guys, seriously??!!
gimme a break. 9.5 vs 8.6 and now the engine is next to useless? I realize all the track 1337's look down on us street car peasants, but to go this far is getting ridiculous. This thing is light. really light (less load and heat). it will have rods. stock pistons are good to AT LEAST 300whp, and if the rest of his setup is really efficient and capable, this thing will be just fine with the 9.5's. |
