Next Stupid question thank you

Ok, i know this a a very dumb idea, but here is my idea... I have a eclipse side mount intercooler that i got with a turbo i baught. Id like to use it, problem is the intlet and outlet are in unwanted locations, and are only 1.75 inches I.D. I would like to replace the existing inlet and outlet with 2 inch inlet and outlet in a differant location. I know this has been done and all i have to do is weld plates in the old inlet and outlet locations and install new inlet and outlet. Problem is, i dont have equipment to weld aluminum. And i dont want to spend the money a shop would charge me to do it, id buy another intercooler before i did that. Is it possible to epoxy or maybe jb weld the plates and new inlets and outlets into place? It seems that the 8psi max that i will running wouldnt put that much stress on a glued joint.. But you guys know a lot more about this than i do. Any comments??

Doesn't seem worth the risk to me. Might as well use an intercooler with better positioned inlet/outlet. Even if you sell the one you have for cheap, you can find another stock intercooler for the price you can sell yours for. I paid $11 for mine, and it has 2" inlet/outlet in workable locations.

timhill78 12-16-2006 03:29 AM

It would be better and less stressful to buy another intercooler that well work without modification. 8psi might be good at first but it would be nice to have something that you could upgrade with.

getsidewaysd1 12-16-2006 07:09 AM

I agree. I'm all for the DIY setup but not at the cost of my motor.

samnavy 12-16-2006 07:59 AM

Screw all that noise. Put the IC up for sale on one of the DSM forums and get yourself a $100 ebay IC with everything in the right location.

magnamx-5 12-16-2006 08:25 AM

i love the avatar tim hill. Bradley just sell the IC and get some WI you know you wanna.

adbradley 12-16-2006 09:49 AM

well i guess i will just use it the way it is for now, thanx

J B weld. now that is a hillbilly idea.... why didn't i think of it.

Braineack 12-16-2006 04:23 PM

Don't underestimate the power of JB Weld. Either deal with the 1.75" or sell it for a cheapo ebay one. The one I'm rocking is like what $80 on Ebay.

adbradley 12-16-2006 05:48 PM

yeah, well i like the idea of free better :) I have other things i have to spend the 80 bucks on right now. i will just have to deal with it untill i can buy a better one.

iWeasel410 12-16-2006 06:04 PM

what about brazing/soldering?

adbradley 12-16-2006 07:34 PM

i really dont see why an epoxy or like i said jb weld wouldnt do the trick, i mean, as long as i brace the pipes well and they dont get a lot of vibration.. seems like an epoxy or jb weld would seal it well enuff... who knows maybe i will try it after i get another IC just to see if it holds up, then someone else could do the same.

adbradley 12-16-2006 07:34 PM

can you solder aluminum??

adbradley 12-16-2006 07:36 PM

these guys say for 65 bucks you can braze it!

http://durafix.com/demo/256.html look at this shit!!!

adbradley 12-16-2006 07:48 PM

oh man, im ordering that stuff tonite, that will do exatley what i want!

Braineack 12-16-2006 08:17 PM

play around with it, if it works as advertised then it would be an easy job.

adbradley 12-16-2006 08:22 PM

already ordered, trust me, if the redneck on the video says it will work, IT WILL WORK :)

magnamx-5 12-16-2006 09:28 PM

I migth pick some up to help with my beer can sculptures in the front yard :gay:

Flippy02 12-17-2006 03:44 AM

on the topic of IC, would an intercooler, or intercooler replacement for the MSM bolt into a 99? with little or no modifications?

magnamx-5 12-17-2006 08:07 AM

depends on your turbo location, it could work but i dunno never touch that IC stuff it gives you lag, the msm IC is abit small anyway, why not get a real one or WI

now that i think of it, i'm better off making my own set up

rotaryjunky 12-17-2006 09:03 AM

Keep us up to date on how that works. It seems too good to be true.

adbradley 12-17-2006 09:38 AM

i will let ya know... If it does work, its going to be aluminum heat shields, aluminum air scoops, aluminum soldered drain pipe into ail plan.. oh the posibilities are endless!!

but you are prolly right, to good to be true!

y8s 12-17-2006 10:06 AM

is it not solder? is it even all-aluminum?

magnamx-5 12-17-2006 10:20 AM

I have seen comercials for aluminoid looks interesting i would be interested if it works, hey flip dont hold back i missed what your post was initialy if you have another opinion or think i am an ass say so and if i cant prove you wrong then you and bripad can be freinds and he can teach you how to make me look like the silly noob i am. We can only grow if we let each other know what bothers us.

adbradley 12-17-2006 10:36 AM

well, that video i posted shows that it works. It seems to be some kind of hard solder that melts at 750 degrees... and then gets hard again very fast.. id say its some sort of aluminum alloy, but did you see how hard it was when he was drilling it?? I guess i will get to test is when it comes in :)

magnamx-5 12-17-2006 10:47 AM

lemme know and ill buy some for my dad he is always raving about trying shit like that, and DIY stuff.

adbradley 12-21-2006 11:26 AM

i cut the pipes off my DSM intercooler last night, and cut the holse for the new pipes. I didnt realize how thin the material is that that thing is made out of.. cant be more than .020" and it has like .100" plates rivited all over it to strengthen it i guess.. Weird design. Just enuff flat place to poke 2 2 inch pipes comming right out of the top though, i think this thing is gonna turn out nice... as long as that durafix solder stuff actualy works.

Atlanta93LE 12-21-2006 11:31 AM

Out the top? Are you going with over-the-rad?

adbradley 12-21-2006 11:33 AM

yup. im going to space the radiator back, and put the IC as high as i can get it. I want to go for the shortest intake as i can.. Im also going to build some ducting the bring air up and straight through the IC

Atlanta93LE 12-21-2006 11:34 AM

Neat; let me know how it goes, as I'm planning on very similar.

adbradley 12-21-2006 11:36 AM

i will try and snap some pics, i plan on building the setback mounts this weekend.

make sure you get all of those filings out. one porsche guy i know ruined a 944 motor by not getting his intercooler clean out throughly after he worked on it.

adbradley 12-22-2006 10:43 PM

yeah, i planned on running a pressure washer through it when its done, then letting it soak in some good soapy watter for a while. Thanx for the tip tho.. ruined 944 engine = shitty

adbradley 12-25-2006 10:11 PM

So how much shit are you guys gonna give me if i braze copper 90 degree elbows to the above intercooler??

magnamx-5 12-26-2006 04:23 AM

So long as t works no care. you are building a wierd Water/methanol tank though j/k

adbradley 12-26-2006 09:35 AM

hahahahahahahhahahah i gotta get some pics of that up... its a fuel tank from a kholer lawn mower... but it is identical to the devils own tank, only its black insted of clear..
