noob trubo

Hey I have a 01 Miata and was looking to gain about 170-190whp. I was mostly wondering what ecu I should use either Megasquirt or some kind of piggyback system. I was thinking about buying a DIY intercooler from eBay due to it being cheep and simple.:noob:

Would I need bigger injectors for my desired hp? like rx8 injectors?

Would I need a different clutch or just a new one?

Lastly any suggestions with what turbo size or brand I should use to get this desired whp.

my budget is around 2500.

Yes you will want slightly larger injectors.

Yes you will need a different clutch.

Id go with the SR20 T25 turbo. They are cheap and can get you to ~200whp fairly easily. Id also go with an older version of Megasquirt. They can be had for 500-600 dollars used here.

When you mean a older version of Megaquirt you still mean for gen2 models?

First, clarify whether you truly meant this or not.

A $2500 budget is going to be hard for you to do.

1. Megasquirt and wideband. Budget at least $1000 for these. You have vvt so you have to go with a MS3.
2. Budget $400 for a clutch. FM1 or ACT are the only brands worth spending money on.
3. $300 for ev14 injectors.

So you are at $1750 before you have bought any other turbo hardware.

Is a new clutch necessary for around 180whp? I thought the stock clutch starts slipping at around 210+

Just because you're a noob doesn't mean you can skip all searching. Seriously just google every one of your questions.

We used to have a rule on our old FSAE team. If a question is asked and it can be found on the first page of google, that person owes the person they asked a beer. Can we enforce that on this site?

Google this:
99 Miata clutch turbo limits
Miata rx8 injector turbo power limits
Best Miata turbo

I think it's possible with your budget but you need do a lot of research and set more detailed goals. The questions you're asking are very basic and have been answered countless times around here.

But n00bs trust everything they read on the internet, especially if it comes from the first search page.

180WHP?

Bandaids like powercards and rising rate AFPR for mgmt. Get a boost gauge. Make some det cans.

Cheapest IC available. Some used BOV.

Clutch...whenever the stocker finally gives up...it will probably last for a little while.

Tacotaco mani, real fake trubo from ebay. Lowest boost can it offers. Port WG. Shooting for like 6 psig.

Local ex shop mating janky DP to horrible stock exhaust.

Stock injectors.

Dyno tune to see if AFRs get leaner than 11.5. If they do, inline fuel pump to get better flow at higher pressure.

That's how you do an utter crap sub $2500 NB trubo that might not blow up without any real knowledge.

Or, stop BS'ing about your budget - which likely is not even 2500- do some basic searches like the main stick turbo thread, and consider not sucking.

$2500 is easy

MS3 $600
flow force injectors $300
Taco manifold $80
Taco turbo $200
Taco intercooler $60
Taco bov $30
Clutch $350
Exhaust and plumbing, muffler $350
Wideband $150

$2100 there, room to spare. You need it for couplers, hangers, hardware, oil lines whatever.

I manage quite alright with something similar on my 1.6. 200ft/lbs is easy.

Ebay ftw

In my view, if your clutch is working well now, it will continue to do so at 200 rwhp for quite a while.

A reflash can easily make 200 from stock injectors with all the standard margins of safety.

My stock clutch (I assume it was the original with ~120k) slipped when hot at 7psi, just for another reference point.

97eunos 02-04-2016 11:42 PM

The stock clutch on my stock 1.8 engine slips when it gets hot with 120000kms on the clock, It seems to be a guessing game wether or not it will hold up...

whinin 02-05-2016 12:06 AM

Mine slipped on a 1.6 with the greddy kit and ms3x at 8 psi. Probably somewhere around 160whp, maybe more. But, that's a 1.6
