Noob with a turbo plan!

Hi guys, I'm a noob, but I think I've done enough research and reading to make a legitimate post about my thoughts.
Little about the car: 1994 1.8L with Torsen LSD 87k miles 5-speed Almost completely stock, only have FM sways. Turbo Miata: -T25 Turbo off sr20, rebuild with the gpro-blahblahblah-site -Flying miata/begi manifold -MSPNP2, waiting to have the money to jump into a group buy like the one that recently ended on September 25th. -stay on 1.8L injectors -o2 clamp -boost controller, reintroduce gas to exhaust -BOV VTA, pshhhh (since I'm running an ECU, this should be no problem) -Oil lines, water lines -what else? Plannin to buy in this order MS->everything else as deals come up on egay/CL/forum I'm a complete noob and just recently joined the forums, but have read the FaQ 10+ times through. I'm the kind of person to plan out everything before I buy anything. My question is, is this setup a smart setup for 5-6psi, and to push 10psi later on? Appreciate any estimation of the amount of power that'd be at the wheels. Basically, I want to make a platform I can build upon as the parts and money come up. My plan is to stay conservative in the power/psi until I can afford put a good clutch kit on, resurface the flywheel, get ahold of some bigger injectors and put a larger diameter exhaust and intercooler and then go for the previously stated ~10psi mark. And if I just need to read up more, I will, just want to make sure I'm headed in the right track. -Ryan |
You will not need an O2 clamp with MS. You will also need bigger injectors than stock 1.8.
|
Thanks for the o2 clamp info, cut that off the list. I was under the impression after reading the FaQ that 1.8 injectors would good up to about 6psi?
A very common upgrade is to install the 1.8L injectors. These will should provide you enough room to run about 7-9psi of boost (170-180rwhp). |
Not really. You can get rx7 460s or 550s, or rx8 440?s for pretty cheap. They will be good for your needs.
|
Alright, thanks Onyxth.
I wonder why that information is in the sticky though, if it isn't necessarily true. |
Because NOBODY stays at 5-6psi for more than a day or two.
|
The stickies are also old as hell.
|
They're not technically wrong though. I was logging 85% duty cycle on '04 1.8 injectors at 6psi, so they can work at low boost pressures albeit in their upper range of efficiency.
But like I said, no one stays at 6psi for more than a few days so it may as well be irrelevant. OP: Get bigger injectors. You'll need them and they're cheap. |
Alright, thanks guys. I will add them to my list. Thinking of getting the 460cc rx7 ones.
|
Stock injectors will handle 6psi no problem. My general rule when it comes to injectors: are you current injectors pintle or bosch type? If they're pintle, then run high imp RX 7's. if they're Bosch, run RX 8's.

Thanks for that Thirdgen, why is that your rule? I'll be checking what I have exactly once I can get at them, any suggestions on their differences? Or is it gonna be branded on there and I'm just wasting site bandwidth with this post?
|
This may be obvious but I didnt see you mention intercooler

with the prices of ev14's I don't see a single reason why anyone, regardless of build goals, would ever want to use ev1's ever again
|
Yeah, intercooler is a must, just forgot to put it down.
Thanks for that information! Ev14's it is. I noticed they come in 40mm, 48mm and 60mm, which is for the miata? A quick search didn't reveal the sizes. |
Better get yourself a wideband too.
By the way, welcome to the forum. I'm a former Banningite. Miss living down there. |

EV14 ID1000's for 90-05 Miata Those are consided the holy grail of injectors. All others are pieces of garbage. Search for some threads on the ID1000's and read how so many users prefer them over others. |
Ray, yes after more reading I'm deciding to do MS, injectors, and WB in at the same time as the first step to get my feet wet with super simple tuning.
Thanks Vishous for the link. |
Anybody care to explain to me or point me towards directions of what I need (and a how to) for water lines to and from the turbo?
I've read good information on it (forgot to take some notes) and I need it again. :noob: |
Of the many threads here that are confusing, the water lines ones are the most!!!
If you search you will see what I mean. I have read a few to try and get an idea for re-fitting of my M-tuned bypass to this motor (my 2nd) but am still confused! I watch with great anticapation! :) OOh, you might want to add the Bypass mod to your list of things to do..... |
