oil drill issue

Hey everyone, idrilled my oil pan today. I did it just to the left of the motor mount. I got through fine, but when i pulled it out i felt in and i found some kind of metal shield. Is that the pickup? It doesnt seem like i damaged it, but i dont see how i can tap it now. any suggestions?

Saml01 02-03-2008 11:19 AM

You can tap it still, just dont go too deep. Also, get a flash light and peek in to see if you damaged the pick up.

Dow.tom 02-03-2008 11:25 AM

i already checked it out and the pickup looks good still, but i cant get the tap to turn. it wont catch. any suggestions for gettings it to catch. I don't think the hole is a completely 11/16th cause i didnt go in far enough, and my rotozip wont fit in there...

Braineack 02-03-2008 11:54 AM

yes just gotta work at it, it's not catching cause the dirll bit is like .1" too small for the tap. so keep trying. possibly go back with teh drill and try ti slightly widen the hole, very slightly.

otherwise keep at it.

This is what you hit:

To orient you to the pic, front=right, anything left of that little space you'll hit the shield.

so is it safe to drilll further in and through the shield? or am i stuck trying to bore the hole out and tap it like is?

magnamx-5 02-03-2008 04:15 PM

Do not drill through the sheild but just grazing it is no big deal It could well be the pickup after abit more distance. I find taping the tap with a hammer etc helps it bite ennitialy as i turn it.

Dow.tom 02-03-2008 04:31 PM

well it's tough to get to it with a hammer but i'll try. I bought the correct drill bit so i'll try t o bore it out a little with it, and than go a little deeper. Than i'll try tapping it again,. I really dont want to pull the motor... or drop the pan.

Saml01 02-03-2008 07:26 PM

What are the measurement from the top and the front that should be dead center of the oil drain fitting?

My biggest concern is drilling to low and being one with the oil level.

I am guessing you cant drill very high either because of the AC bracket?

Dow.tom 02-03-2008 10:29 PM

im pretty damn close to the top, within 1inch to the center of the hole.

Dow.tom 02-05-2008 02:11 PM

okay well i cant get my fitting in because it;s hitting the shield. any ideas koto? okay to drill through it a little or to bend it with a screw driver?

magnamx-5 02-06-2008 12:19 AM

I would definatly bend it in. If you are 1000000000000% sure that there is no little tube of metal in the way feel with your finger first please. Then drill through the sheild, having a hole in the sheild is not bad having a hole in the oil pick up means
A. Pull the motor
B. Hope you are a lucky jewish bastard like Loki i beleive and JB weld the hole shut.
C. Pull the subframe
None of those apeal to me and i don't think they would apeal to you either. So do some recon and make the call Tom. GL.

weir 02-06-2008 08:10 AM

man, pulling a motor for such a small little thing is a pain, but imo, the right way to do it. it will probably save you headaches in the long run, as it seems it would have already saved you some anxiety.

kotomile 02-06-2008 02:30 PM

I did mine with the engine pulled for precisely this reason, Tom. Not knocking on you, just saying. With the pan off I was guaranteed not to mess anything up. Can you take some pics?

Dow.tom 02-06-2008 03:29 PM

ill try to take a few pics. i went outsdie today and felt around. It is a smooth surface with a slope to it, and towards the bottom it has a sudden drop off. My assumption is that i was a hole in the shield like in your pics Koto. I'm thinking since this isnt my DD in the winter i should just pull the motor/trans and do my clutch at the same time. Thoughts on this? It should take a day to pull and a day to replace/drill/clutch. Probably will same me alot of trouble knowing that i am 100% safe. Koto how long it take you to remove it? Did you drop the motor or pull out of the bay?

Braineack 02-06-2008 03:30 PM

there's no reason to drop the pan.

use the as a reference, use the bolt holes to get your bearings straight.

Dow.tom 02-06-2008 03:40 PM

not quite sure what your telling me to do scott?

Braineack 02-06-2008 03:43 PM

im telling ya to just bend the bitch :)

Saml01 02-06-2008 03:57 PM

Hey Scott, how do you know that where the oil fitting is in that picture is not below the oil level.

Dow.tom 02-06-2008 03:59 PM

okay so just bend the shield? okay i'll put a screwdriver in tomorrow and hammer it in a little. correct me if im wrong, that is what you ment?

Saml01 02-06-2008 04:11 PM

Ok, so its pretty much in the corner of the pan.

Braineack 02-06-2008 04:16 PM

yeah, the rule of thumb is : between the first two bolt holes, as high as you can.

Dow.tom 02-18-2008 04:12 PM

okay i have come to my decision. I ordered MMR Mounts sat. So I will pull the motor/tranny and do the mounts, oil pan, and clutch. A long with cleaning up some wiring and grounds that have worn over the years. I see it as a good time to clean the engine bay out and have a nice looking car come spring, seeing as i wo nt drive it till than.

Dow.tom 02-19-2008 01:39 PM

ghey question, does the frion line need to be de-pressurized before i remove it?

fmowry 02-19-2008 02:40 PM

Don't pull the AC compressor unless you're removing AC. You can just zip tie it out of the way when you pull the motor.

Frank

Dow.tom 02-19-2008 03:08 PM

i do plan to remove the AC. You got a lift i can borrow frank?

fmowry 02-20-2008 12:40 PM

It's almost done. Need to add fluid, raise it, and tighten up all the bolts. Should be done by Thursday but I need it to start removing shit.

Mark where you are drilling the pan before you pull the motor so that you can see all the clearance items as they are. Mine is tapped behind the A/C compressor, but is awfully close to the power steering line.:eek5:

Dow.tom 02-20-2008 04:31 PM

i already drilled a hole but i hit the shield behind it, and cant get the tap started. I plan to remove it and move the shield away a little than tap and put the fitting in, i know it will fit though.

slomx5 02-20-2008 08:38 PM

bend it

Dow.tom 02-22-2008 02:18 PM

well i spent most of the day. And well im only have a few things left to pull off. I have to take off tghe connectors on the alternator, and starter, and lastly i need to remove the driveshaft, and than its time to pull :)

magnamx-5 02-23-2008 12:40 AM

GL tom

Dow.tom 02-23-2008 10:21 AM

thanks rich, i'll need it. All i hae left is the driveshaft, and to mark and pull the hood. Than pull slowely and check as it goes. Pics shortly today i hope.

Dow.tom 02-23-2008 02:44 PM

well go figure i got stuck on the driveshaft. IT wont come unbolted, it just rotates as i try with the socket wrench. Tips? What am i missing?

Dow.tom 02-23-2008 08:33 PM

okay the driveshaft is out. had to find a hoist and the only place that rented was closed, so i bought a 2 ton hoist from HF or 130 on sale from 199. ill try to pull tomorrow, and hopefully everything was removed.

Dow.tom 02-24-2008 04:00 PM

okay i got the motor out. Time to tap the oil pan, and motormounts / clutch. Hope to have it in by next weekend, i'll post pictures tonight. I plan to give this engine the full treatment of plugs, wires, and hoses.

musanovic 02-25-2008 01:06 AM

damn step by step things accomplished. do you carry your computer with you outside when you work? i can see it all in my head as i am reading. lol lets see some pics.
