Now that I get ACTUALLY get it... can I remove the stock coolant sandwich plate and plug the holes on the block... then install a an actual "oil cooler" sandwich plate?

Truthfully, I wouldn't. I ran a "proper" Mocal plate and cooler for a while, and in daily-driver mode it was rubbish. The oil took half of eternity to get up to 160° and never really got above that on my normal commute.

A few months ago I removed said oil cooler and installed the stock 1.8 cooler onto my engine. Absolutely wonderful! In the morning, the oil comes up to temp much faster than it did even when stock, and tends to stabilize around 210-220°, which is just about perfect.

Yeah it's a liquid-liquid exchange and works well for all street purposes. Only people who would need more oil cooling are those who run long periods on track, especially with water cooled turbos.

There is sandwich plates with built in thermostats for that, i think that mocal even does some "second thought" therostat that you just connect inline between cooler and plate. Best of two worlds.
