OK to say hello?

Just wanted to say hello from the UK. We recently bought an 800 GBP MX-5 as a drag car project and may end up doing a turbo conversion. The FAQ at the top of this forum is a godsend.

I almost dare not say it, but we are considering one of the eBay kits as a starting point. Some good info on here and miata.net about those too. So thanks again.

You indeed may dare! just don't buy any of those ebay kits. Read Braineack's sticky on DIY turbos and start asking. If you read before asking these guys will not flame you:)

Check mikef85 posts on building a drag car.

Welcome!

Thanks for the welcome.

Already been trying to absorb Braineack's sticky - it looks like the word when it comes to this stuff. Plenty of posts by mikef85 too. I'm going to be busy reading.

Cheers!

yeah, if you want reliability - dont go for ebay kits. i would suggest picking up one of begi kits as they come with everything you need to complete your project without any complications.

Hmmm. Had always thought the BEGI kits would be too expensive for our budget-minded build. But the BEGI-S system looks the muts nuts for the same price as the eBay kits. Food for thought. Thanks.

Yea, its the dogs bullocks hands down.

The other benefit of the BEGi kit is customer support on an E-Bay kit good luck.

Oh and Welcome to the 'Bad Lands' on Miata Turbo.

There are a few of us from the UK here. I don't post a great deal but do keep an eye on what posts are running. Lots of information and expertise here and on miata.net. You could also try the powerlist.

Nice motor! Any performance figures for it (RR or qtr mile)? Also, what's the powerlist?

Steve, really nice job on your car; congrats! One question: what have you done to your drivetrain? when I click on that link I don't get anything. I have to say I'm curious because of your whp levels.

No RR yet. Visited RRs more when I was pushing the envelope on the 1.6l (worked head, TEC3r, WI, GT2860RS, stock bottom end). With those pulls I calibrated DLL to give values a little lower than the RR figures on my favourite road (surprisingly reliable given good input values). Part of the reason for not bothering so much with the RR now is that the 2L engine makes so much more torque/power than the 1.6L did that it almost doesn't matter.

The other issue is the drivetrain which is stock 5-speed. I baby the car off the line, only ever give it full throttle in 3rd and up when it really comes into its own (1st and 2nd will just spin away the power anyway). Boost is restricted to 12 to 13psi right now giving between 300 and 325hp in DLL. Spare tranny in the garage just in case (on my second). A 6-speed and 3.9 or 3.6 rear diff is on the menu but, for various reasons, I've just don't have the time to worry about the car at the moment. For now it has to wait and I have to, very frustratingly, worry about loosing my tranny every time I nail it.
