old volvo turbo in a miata?

there's a free volvo turbo up for grabs on my local CL. i'm wondering if it's worth trying to apply it to my 91? i'm thinking it should be pretty low boost, so i'm wondering how much (if any?) fuel management would be needed, and what i'd need for parts. i'd probably get the cheapo OBX manifold and downpipe from eBay. does a turbo like this need to be intercooled, or could i go without?

so 150 bucks for manifold and downpipe and free turbo... could i really get a (mildly) successful turbo set up?

Go to the NEWB section of the forum and read a few threads from there. It's on the main page, just scroll down. You'll quickly find out that newbs that fail to search and learn on their own don't last long here. Read all the faqs and stickies. See you in a few weeks.

sorry about that, i should've known better. i'll go do that. mods, please delete or lock this thread. it's of no use to anybody until i learn more about turbos.

thank you

Aww, look a humble noob! skiboy, I'm sure after doing some learnding, you will be welcome here with open arms. (just don't drop the soap)

I'd get the cheap ass cast manifold, and get DP made.

under 6psi or so shouldn't require an intercooler...

Free! I would get it.
Good Luck!

free t3 + tacotaco mani+ diy downpipe and crossover tube = cheap fun. dont forget to add fuel.

Is that what we are telling him?

volvo garretts are also internally gated to 9.6 psi. theres a lot more to it then just "bolting it on".

 That cheap-ass cast manifold is a t3 flange.

That said, T3s weren't the only turbo to come on Volvos.

Nobody mentioned anything about "just bolting it on". :bang:

Dude, just go away or something ... all one would need to adjust the boost is a manual boost controller of some sort. That manifold will work just fine, theres a few peeps running that one w/o problems. Just gotta stay away from the tubular manifolds.

Braineack 10-02-2008 10:43 AM

you stupid fuck. the OBX manifold is a t3 flange as well. Bye.

Braineack 10-02-2008 11:00 AM

I'm positive these things used to be sold as T3 flange's a few years ago. Regardless, it was the OP himself that suggest a OBX manifold, where we said use the ilovetacotaco manifold in it's stead.

get over yourself dude, you really dont know shit about anything man.
sorry I don't keep up with the latest eBay manifold offerings. What im trying to figure out is how i ran my volvo t3 wastegate at 6psi, when of course it's a 9.6psi wastegate.

AlexO35 10-02-2008 11:35 AM

Volvo had multiple turbo offerings per model. In the dealer documentation they mention "low pressure" and "high pressure" turbo options. That applies to the older model line up, (up to the mid 90s) where I would assume a free turbo would come from. So the older ones (T3's, .69 A/R 45 trim) could very well have had two different wastegate setups....

right- OP said that, Brainy offered up the cast which is t3.

And most volvo oem turbos are t3.
Most- not all. And which does the OP have?

You can pick up used lower psi wg cans on for cheap on eBay.

You'd be better off having the facts vs. shooting down all the suggestions as wrong.

None of this complicated.
