Plze cme tell me how to spend $400

Alright its been a while since ive had cash! I have $400 bucks sitting in the bank, But now that i have it, im kind of like fozen stiff not nowing what will get me to a running turbo miata faster. Do i buy a Few larger parts so with little money down the road i can get stuff still? or should i buy a whole alot of the little annoyig parts that will hold up the final build at the end?

I already have:
BEGI mani
Begi dp
FMIC
Turbo timer
NA RX-7 inj.

I see three different routes to focus on. 1. finish intercooler with cheap piping and couplers, or cheap turbo (T3) from a junkyard and a rebuild kit and try to follow Brains directions on it. or FUEL, FUEL, FUEL, FUEL.

So tell me what you think I should have about the same amount to spend in may, so you can plan this month and next if you would like. Be sure to share any cool links where i could find all this too.

buy the turbo, hang it above your bed so that you look at it every morning, eat ramen noodles only until you save up the cash for everything else.

Your best bet to save time and money down the road is to get someones used EmanageBlue. For that price, you can probably also expect some injectors and harnesses. That'll put you with 2 sets of injectors to experiment with tuning if they happen to be different... or one set to re-sell. You can install the emanage now, get it in, tuned, and running while still Naturally Aspirated, and save a lot of headache trying to get it to work while under boost. You won't need a Bipes or fuel pump... and depending on the power you want, maybe not even an FPR.

Option #2: If you plan on more than about 150hp, you need a clutch. The stock one won't hold up above that. I'm happy for now with my SpecII at a butt dyno 190rwhp. But you can also score ACT, RPS, and a few others rated for around 250ftlbs for under $400. That'll probably even get you most of the little bushings/seals you also need to change.

Option #3: forget the turbo, get some suspension. For $400 total, you can score some used KYB AGX shocks and RB SwayBars with a little left over. You'll probably be able to get some RB springs as well and stay within price, but I suggest you ride in a lowered Miata before installing them on your car.

Option #4: From a safety standpoint: Rollbar and brakes. There are several models from Autopower, HardDog, and BossFrog that are new in the low $300's, and if you could find one used for less, leave enough money for a set of steel-braided Goodridge BrakeLines.

There are a lot of other things as well to consider:
The AEM wideband is a nice piece, but an LC-1 and a laptop will do the same thing, plus be expandable. I'm currently saving up for an LM-1/AuxBox so I'll never need a Dyno again for any car I ever own... but those are close to $600 shipped.

Other things you'll have to buy eventually:
Boost gauge.
Fuel Filter.
Spark plugs and wires.
Turbo: Your Begi stuff is for T3's? I think the going rate for junkyard turbo's is like $40... shouldn't be a problem.
Exhaust: I like my Borla Duals, but at 2.25", they're a little small for max power. You can have your own custom made for far less, but it will be LOUD until you're turbo'd.

Do us a favor and fill out your signature with a brief list of your mods... both turbo and for the rest of the car. It'll help us help you if we don't have to look back through your posts to find out what kind of car you have.
Also, fill out your profile with where you live. Peole that live in the same city will often offer to come over and help out, or know where the best deals locally are.

Oh ya, sell the turbo timer (big waste of money) and use it to replace all your fluids, rad/dif/tranny/etc... Don't forget some Seafoam for the intake and gastank.

Ok i think im going to go for the used turbo, or the e manage blue, ill try to get it all cheap. So do you all think that more than $100 bucks is to much for a used T3? Also i will try to do all those updates you suggested. Im at work right now but i will do it when i get home. Until then what about that LC-1. Anyone have any prices?

Kelly 04-06-2007 03:51 PM

I like to make sure I have all my little shit up front that I know will hold me up. Extra 02 bung and plug, oil lines/fittings/restrictor/flanges, T bolt clamps and couplers, heatshielding for the heater hoses and a turbo blanket, hardware and gaskets to bolt the turbo to the manifold and the downpipe to the turbo. A wideband is a must and one with a gauge and logging capable will make your life easy.

Fallin Blade 04-06-2007 09:32 PM

I think I'm just going to start at the San Diego Junk yards tomorrow. Try to find a Turbo from a Thunder Bird. If I can get that then i will buy a rebuild kit. Then maybe the LC-1 ? We will have to see. Im searching for the LC-1 right now.

samnavy 04-07-2007 12:49 AM

For the LC-1, unless you can get in on a group buy or somebody has a hook-up, eBay is the cheapest at $190. You can get just the controller for $150 if you've got a compatible sensor.

timhill78 04-07-2007 03:30 AM

There's one guy on ebay that has a best offer option on a lc-1. He'll go down to $174.99.
