Preventing the hood paint from cooking away
So I'm mostly finished with my turbo build, but with how high the turbo sits (the compressor housing sits less than an inch from the underside of the hood) I'm worried about cooking the paint on the hood. What temperature will the hood paint degrade at? And is a heatshield/blanket all I need to prevent it from cooking or will i have to line the hood? Right now I'm leaning towards just a turbo blanket since I'm not very handy with fabrication, so I'm not sure about making a heatshield myself.

Just use sheet metal from the valve cover over to where the airbox used to be.

They sell stick on heat barrier that I've used before under the hood. Works great.

Nice downpipe
DEI tunnel-mat. |
I loved watching steam come off the hood in the rain back when I had the greddy kit. The HKS and Greddy manifolds both put the turbo extremely close to the hood. I never had problems with my paint and never ran any insulation to protect it either.

The first time in rain with a turbo is a fun experience..I like the part where you panic from all the "smoke" and the relief when you realize it's just vapor. Good times. In fact, I remember when y8s called me once when driving his miata in the rain asking about "smoke" it must never rain in CA.

That's not true.
It rains a whole 2 days out of the year:giggle: |
he must not have driven it those days...maybe it was the weekend and he slept in.
