Putting my foot in the pool - T25 score
2 Attachment(s)
I've been mostly lurking here for a few years and I've finally decided to move forward with FI. The goal is around 200 whp and it will be a daily driver when it's done. Lots of of ground to cover first ( aluminum rad, clutch), but I decided to get an early jump on the turbocharger since I wanted to take a crack at rebuilding a t25. It's cheap, meets my power goals and I really like taking shit apart and putting it back together. I was always missing out on the deals though, and after 6 months I considered hunting down a low-mileage GT25 on ebay. Until this morning. This was advertised as a T28. I couldn't get all the numbers from the CL seller, but the Nissan number 144111-50F00 matched up to a JDM early 90's 180sx.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1401584219 The seller didn't know what it came from and seemed to be into Volvos. $40. Some play in the shaft and no nicks. I thought it was strange that the Garrett site has no info on the Garrett number 46613-7002A. It has a .80 compressor housing and a .64 turbine housing. Looks like I have a summer project. |
I'm very certain that you have a standard sr20 turbo. Throw in a $80 gpopshop rebuild kit, and it should outlast your motor. Great score!

Looks to be the same turbo that I have. It performs amazing on my 1.8. Sounds like your build will be identical to mine. Check my build in my signature. I hit my goal of 200 whp.

Wow, just bought this. Please someone tell me I did good. It's an oldie FM manifold and apparently a old BEGI made unit?
Fmii Flyin Miata Turbo Manifold | eBay Sheesh. Any thoughts on the expansion cuts on the manifold? Wider gap it seems on one side. I know surfacing is likely in order. Same guy listed the GT28, FM downpipe and cooler lines for another $100. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Garrett-T28-...p2047675.l2557 Done for the night |
Manifold looks like it might be one of the first manifolds FM ever produced.
The t28 with lines is a good deal, because it looks like a current FM turbine outlet is attached to it. A media blaster would clean that right up. The turbo is most likely a journal bearing version of a gt2560. Very similar to the sr20 unit that you picked up, except your Sr20 uses a 56mm diameter wheel while the t28 should have a 60mm wheel. 4mm diameter means you will move a higher volume of air. |

He SAYS it's a ball bearing turbo in the ad. But he also says it's a garret, but the housing does not bear any insignia. He also says you can find them for $250 on ebay all day long, and that his $150 sale is competitive. Are you sure it's not just a ball bearing churbo?

Oh, I stand corrected then. And in the event you got a good condition gt2560R DBB turbo for $150, I will be extremely jealous.

not bad. put in some good ol elbow grease cleaning it all up and you got yourself a decent setup
|
No up-close shot of the serial number plate? It's not a Garrett or it's not ball bearing.

I thought the changes to the compressor housing looked familiar. I remember seeing up-close pics of a new FMII GT2560R on Revlimiters site. Same mods as seen here:
https://www.miataturbo.net/diy-turbo...ections-75290/ Even the "60" is cast into the inside of the compressor outlet. I think it's the real deal. Should have it soon. |
Have the same turbo as the OP if anyone is interested

PM me and I'll buy it

I finally got the turbo and down-pipe 81 days after they were mailed. My local PO sucks.
I spoke to the seller and apparently he bought an FM2 kit many years ago ( hence the older intake manifold) and first turbo "melted" after extended use of a turbo blanket. (his claim) He got a replacement turbo and upper downpipe through FM. There is no tag on the CHRA, but I can see one of the attachment points where is should be. The turbine housing has "Garrett" cast in it and the compressor housing has all the machining that FM does ( did?) to work with the hoses on their kit. Here's another example I've seen other pics like this with more gouges, and I think this owner has the housing polished to remove those markings. I suppose I will have to remove the CHRA and measure to know 100%. He told me this second turbo has about 8K miles on it. So all together, Turbo, upper downpipe, FM cooling hard lines and intake manifold for $268 shipped. The backup turbo, a T25 rebuilder, was another $40. Gotta get this all cleaned up now. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1408827774 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1408827774 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1408827774 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1408827774 Attachment 239033 |
