Question for DIY manifold people

I know this is a real dumb question, and i know its not something that a professional welder would approve of, and i know due to differant heat properties this is not smart buttttttt....:nono:

Has anyone ever used stainless steel weld elbows to make a log style manifold, then welded it to a mild steel flange? and if so did it work?

Thanx:crx:

My manifold used a stainless flange and weld els. Full-Race and many other manifold makers swear by using a mild steel flange. FWIW I had no issues with my stainless one.

im talking about stainless steel (weld els) welded to mild steel flange

Yes you can do it, you just need the appropriate filler material. Off the top of my head, 309 will work if you're stick welding.

i am mig welding, what type of wire do i need?

thank you!

just out of curiousity, since I hope to tread this path myself, why not go full SS or full mild steel?

adbradley 11-11-2006 08:52 PM

i already have a flange that is mild steel, and weld els that are SS, i had originaly planned to go all SS, but i got a free flange.. and im cheep..

I was talking about both. Do whatever you prefer. www.flipsidecustoms.com has 3/8" 3044 ss flanges for sale that are already machined for weld els. I could have stood on my Flipside manifold.

Ok, i gave up on the SS to mild steal idea and decided to just order new weld ells, and make my own tee's whitch i accomplished today.. I also cut the pipes off of the stock manifold so that i could use the flange on mine.

My question is, i need to grind out the ports in the manifold flange to make them a bit bigger, basically to remove the factory welds, what is the best method to doing this. I am guessing some special bit on my drimmel, but im not sure what bit will give me the best bang for my buck, i know those things are expensive.. any ideas?

Yeah, you can weld anything together if you use the right wire. My downpipe is stainless welded to iron or mild steel. It cracked the first time but my fabricator rewelded it and it has stayed together for about 3 years now.
