Rebuilding bottom end on SE/Mazdaspeed Turbo, what kit?
Hi guys and girls,
I'm about to rebuild a non turbo bottom end to suit a (bp-4w) factory turbo car, looking at what rebuild kits I can use. I'm looking at going 20 thou over to be safe. Few questions.... Do the turbo engines use the same 9.5 pistons OR are they an upgraded piston? Would the mizumo auto kits on eBay be suitable? If not who sells budget turbo rebuild kits? I need all gaskets, pistons, bearings, and may use h beam rods if it fits the budget. Thanks guys |
The turbo bottom ends are identical to the non-turbo bottom ends. Same pistons, same rods. If you're just "rebuilding" to make it stronger, then you need to do a lot more research before starting. You can use shitty ebay rebuild kits if you want, but don't expect us to care when half the gaskets leak and the rings don't seal up correctly.
Finally, if you rebuild the engine without putting H-beams in it, you're an idiot. |

The vehicle that I'm doing the motor for has thrown a rod at the last club track day. The car will not be used (as far as I know) on the track anymore as the owner has now bought a race built car (my evo gold mx5) I had a look at your store and can't see that you sell gasket kits or rods so I'm hoping I can get your unbiased opinion on who would be the best supplier to buy from that is willing to ship to Australia. As stated in the 1st thread I have a 1.8 bp short block from an early mx5. I plan on going 20thou over to ensure no blow by and a fresh motor. I will need....... Bearings (will have the short block on Sunday to check sizing) Pistons and rings A full gasket set Possible oil pump (again need to check clearances) Possible water pump Timing kit There are two rebuild kits on eBay with 9.0:1 comp ratios not the 9.5:1 which the turbo motor came out with, I can't see a problem with this, what are your thoughts? The two rebuild kits are from Mizumo auto Domestic gaskets (this one does not Come with a water pump like the other one) Can you see any problems with these kits and if so what are the weak points? And either Godspeed rods or cx racing rods. Thanks for you help |

You can either buy the Manley units I sell for $360, or order cheaper units on eBay and have them checked over by a competent machinist to ensure that they're fit for use. You'll probably end up spending the same money either way.
