Removing SR20 T25 Compressor Housing

So i've read the writeup, i've got the 90 degree needle nose and i'm able to compress the ring but I cant get beyond that. The way the needle nose grab the ring makes it easy for them to slip off. I tried getting under the ring with pick tools to try and lift it up but i cant really do much while the ring is compressed.

Anyone have a trick for this that I am missing?

i modified a pair of needle nose pliars so they were notched at the end and didn't slip out.

Good idea. Since I bought this pair of 90 needle nose specifically for this purpose i have no problem notching them. I'll give it a shot, thanks.

same thing i did. Harbor Freight FTW for expendable tools.

Or try snapring pliers.

couldn't find big enough snap ring pliers for that snap ring

I'm pretty certain that this snapring would make minced meat of any set of snapring pliers i've ever seen.

JKav 10-13-2008 08:42 PM

They come in all sizes, even ones big enough to deal with the snapring in question.

It is a beefy snapring, to be sure. Lots of energy stored up when you've got that sucker squished down in the pliers...

paul 10-13-2008 08:46 PM

but try finding those snapring pliers locally. i checked several places and couldn't find a pair that could handle it. $5-$7 on some long reach needle nose at HF and called it a day.

FWIW, the 90 needle nose with the notch worked flawlessly. Ring is off and holy hell this turbo must have been spitting TONS of oil into the last motor it was attached to...

I had to use super heavy duty large ass Snap-On brand snap ring pliers....After I got the hernia I was able to free the ring.

I had to buy a big-ass set of locking snap ring pliers when I was swapping compressor housing plates on my t28. I tried using the $8 HF large needle nose pliers but they would always slip off.

I have a follow-up question to this.

I cannot figure out how to get the plate off that covers the torx screws on the compressor side. Whats the trick?

I've been slowly disassembling this damn thing for like 2 weeks. I hope I remember how it goes back together if I ever get to it =O

That should help you out

I read and re-read that. Here is the only thing that explains even closely how to take that plate off.

"Once the shaft is out, start taking things out of the inside... the rings, bearings, c-clips, etc..."

I've got the clip off that was similar to the huge pita clip but i cannot get the plate off...i hear it snaps into place, but i dont see how to "un-snap" it.

Are you referring to the plate in this picture held down by the snapring? Nothing except the snapring holds it in place. However, since it's a dissimilar metal to the CHRA, it might somehow be "jammed" together. Use some penetrating fluid overnight and some force.

Yes, thats what i speak of. Ring is off. I'll PB blast it today.

Is that an o-ring directly behind it? Its likely just stuck to that.

So its been soaking for a week in PB blaster. I still cant get that thing off. Tried tapping from the other side with a hammer, whacking the assembly on my bench and on the anvil side of my vice. Tried getting a variety of pliers to get a grip on something but there isn't anything to get a grip on. I tried getting pick tools around the edge but there isn't any way of getting them underneath the plate. I even tried using a strong magnet (figured I might as well haha) and of course that didn't work.

It doesn't look like there is any way to get a tool in from the hot side to push from underneath the plate. Any other suggestions?
