Is this running toO lean?

I really have no idea how to read the air/fuel graphic. Could you guys give me a hand? The mechanic says is a "little" lean at 5-6k but it will be fine as it is. Is it safe to run it the way it is of do I need to go back and adjust?

too rich between 3-4.5 and too lean after that, assuming under boost. I know very little about tuning

Full_Tilt_Boogie 10-26-2014 01:20 PM

Your tuner sucks dick.

In order...
Surely.
Your mechanic is an idiot and should be working at Subway. I say this, because he can't give good advice on AFR's, so I assume he can't fix a car right either. Maybe he can fix a sandwich?
Go back and adjust. Post a screen shot of your fuel table and we will tell you what to do.

Savington 10-26-2014 02:57 PM

Your tuner is a hack and your mechanic is an idiot. Chargeback the session on your CC, never go back there and don't go WOT until you get it retuned by someone who knows what they are doing.

I like how I agonize over 0.1-0.2 AFR points on cars I tune, and other tuners get away with shit like this. Sigh.

Oso787 10-26-2014 03:57 PM

Thanks for the opinion guys. The car was built by a different person which was the one who tuned it the way it sits. I asked this shop to run it on the dyno to see if the car had a "safe tune" to drive it on the weekends. The shop has nothing to do with the tune currently on the car. I guess I have some homework to do. Thanks again.

oshiikuru 10-27-2014 07:44 AM

try to get around 12 (AFR) at WOT.
11,5 - 12,0 is allways a good area for turbo cars. Subarus for example are factory richer - but lost power - tuners go around 11.5 AFR for more power and enough fuel for a bit cooling. (ROZ95 or better ROZ98 - don´t know which ROZ pumpgas in USA is)

can you post your open loop fuel table?

Mazdaspeeder 10-28-2014 09:48 AM

I got a chip tune from a vendor here that ran at 12.5:1 at WOT. I asked the same question and was assured everything was OK. I believed them and drove the car with confidence. My motor lasted about 400 miles before the rings gave out and started burning oil, leading to piston skirt damage and eventually a full overhaul. According to the company and their lawyer, I'm no longer allowed to mention it directly, so I'll leave the guesswork of who it was up to the people.

Cliff Notes: get your shit retuned before you end up like me. The point is 12.5AFR is not acceptable for a turbo miata

concealer404 10-28-2014 10:02 AM

Yeah i heard about Begi running flashes like that. Shit's dumb.

Who's that? Lol

You want to be between 11.5 and 12.0 anyone that tells you over 12 is acceptable on pump gas is a moron.

As already stated: you're too rich in the midrange and way dangerously lean up top. That tune is not safe.

OP, get retuned or your car will end up dead like the Whore of Babylon

My current tune is 11.3-11.5@wot. This seems to be a safe area. Can I make more power going to 12? Probably. Is it worth risking my motor for? Nope.

He was joking. :giggle: Those people were the ones that fucked up his car.

Anyways, i've been saving that thread to go back and see what Corky said in it until i'm off work so i won't have to try to stifle my guffaws.

Savington 10-28-2014 01:56 PM

12.5 = melted shit
11.8 = safe forever

oshiikuru 10-28-2014 02:40 PM

The Subarus driving fine - the most nissans driving fine around 12AFR. Maybe its the difference in pumpgas? we are running 98+ (ROZ).

under 11 is a bit rich in my opinion.

Yes, under 11 is too rich. We don't need 10.x

Our engine is different than Nissan and needs more fuel to be safe from detonation. 12.0 can be bad with the wrong timing

oshiikuru 10-28-2014 06:48 PM

On subis - 10.x can be bad with the wrong timing :D

on 95ROZ and around 10.5 (stock AFR 10.2 - 9.xx at WOT) with ~6PSI more boost, the engine feels some knocking.
on 98ROZ - all fine on my subaru (and at the STI from a buddy too) :-)

more boost and stock timing is always a bad thing. i´m going to tune the miata around 1degree each 1,4 PSI at the beginning and around safe 11.5 AFR at WOT (thinking this is a good starting point - or i´m wrong?).

Twodoor 10-29-2014 02:37 AM

I know about RON (Research Octane Number) MON (Motor Octane Number) and AKI (Anti Knock Index (RON+MON)/2 )

Is ROZ the same as RON?

If so, premium fuel in the US ranges between around 95 RON for 91 AKI fuel, 97 RON on 93 AKI, and 99 RON on 94 AKI.

Keith

oshiikuru 10-29-2014 08:16 AM

ah RON must be the same as ROZ. I tought in US theres only 91 or 93 octane fuel (RON/ROZ).

so you turbo guys driving 97 ore 99 RON?

edit: here in germany we got 95RON, 98/100RON, 102RON, E85.
