'GRATS MAN!!

That 1st time hitting boost is a feeling that can only be replicated by the 1st time hitting BIG BOOST with a built engine

You've got the original SSA top mount manifold. Nothitblock is bottom mount. Meanwhile you should figure out a brace for it, or it will hit block. ;) Congrats!

elesjuan 07-09-2013 12:34 PM

Thanks everyone, but I've got a problem. That tial wastegate has a 10psi spring installed (Big yellow, should be 10.15psi) shows regular pressure of making 14psi in data logs saturday and sunday night, and was making 23psi last night. We're not talking spikes, I mean solid 23psi. Bad. Wastegate signal source is from the intake manifold, compressor does not have a tapped boss for vacuum/pressure signal.

Is the incredibly shitty design of this manifold venting off just the number 4 cylinder the reason for this?

18psi 07-09-2013 12:47 PM

Definitely not. ETD long tubes do it the same way and have no problem staying under even 10psi

Either you have a stiffer spring, or maybe the wg is stuck somehow?

m2cupcar 07-09-2013 12:48 PM

I doubt it. DCVN has the SSA manifold, 38mm TiAL and is using the EWG port w/o issue. Y8s mani was the same #4 design with a 38mm EWG and he didn't have issues.

elesjuan 07-09-2013 01:21 PM

Okay ill look into the spring. The gate came with a small red and a large yellow, I used the yellow and it was quite the bitch to install. Bought it second hand off a forum member and promptly disassembled it for inspection, noticed it had the large yellow spring installed and the diaphragm was slightly pinched between the cover and base of the gate so I took great care ensuring that didn't happen again. Could there be damage to the diaphragm?

My original inspection didn't appear there was a tear in the rubber or whatever material it's made from..

m2cupcar 07-09-2013 01:29 PM

fwiw- The large spring is going to be the higher wg pressure.

viperormiata 07-09-2013 09:43 PM

PM me if you want/need different springs. My mvs came with a shit ton that I don't need.

Fireindc 07-09-2013 11:40 PM

Put the smaller spring in or have a very short-lived turbo miata experience, LOL.

Seriously congrats though.

Think the only reason I'd even admit to this is because I'm fairly drunk right now. Something came out...

Pulling the engine tomorrow evening to investigate what might've happened.. All I can say is OH MY GOD, boost is AMAZING. I realized something just now. Before messing with anything I had a pretty regular 14psi manifold pressure but the BOV wasn't opening, in fact it actually ended up blowing off my hotside boost pipe on a full throttle dump. Took the valve off the car, removed one of the springs so it would actually function then it started making enormous boost. After typing that, I'm not sure why that'd even be related. I'll be placing the 5psi spring in the wastegate and playing with EBC I Think.

Regardless of what came out I'm actively searching for a reputable machine shop for a block that's been waiting for these:

Part of the reason I never actually started the motor build is I'm afraid that'll get blown up too. Guess you only live once, and there's really only one way to find out. Decided from here on out I'm going to change my tuning tactic by reducing my spark table by 3 or 4 degrees in boost then increase the cells in VE table by +40% across ALL cells above 100kpa then I'll tune it to lean out instead of the other way around.... Maybe with some luck a built motor might handle 23psi on a regular basis..

#YOLO

18psi 07-12-2013 01:36 AM

welp

that was fast

lol

elesjuan 07-12-2013 01:40 AM

So the guy who occupies the office next to mine is a mazdaspeed3 owner who said, "zoom zoom boom.." to describe boosted mazdas. I blame him.

That was awful quick but I'm not even upset or really that embarrassed about it. I'm still learning and well, shit happens. My biggest enemy is patients which eventually run out then I start doing silly shit that I'd normally never do. With any luck it'll be on the road again by next weekend. :)

elesjuan 07-12-2013 10:38 PM

Andy came over to help me pull the motor out and now I'm pissed.

The wastegate signal line burst. That's what caused 23psi. Still mad at myself for not seeing that high of a pressure until it was too late.

Time for a built motor. To be continued.

Lesson learned: The next motor will have a -4AN stainless braided line for the wastegate signal.

18psi 07-13-2013 01:48 AM

my friend had that happen on a 2jz single snail mk3 poopra

went from 18psi to ALLOFIT while racing my other friend...looked like VTAK KICKED IN YO!!

fun stuff

you live and you learn lol

Fireindc 07-13-2013 01:11 PM

LOL, damn. Boom goes the dynamite.

My best guess is the rod snapped. C'est ma vie.

elesjuan 07-15-2013 10:13 PM

So I've been doin' quite a bit of drinking tonight.. Half tempted to weld hole shut and replace rod/piston with a uhm, not broken one..
