simple intercooler mounts

I managed to mount my inter-cooler with brackets made from threaded bar covered in heat shrink. :D There are suitable holes in the panel by the radiator on top. The bottom side uses the holes for the a/c radiator mounts. If a/c was fitted then longer bottom brackets would be needed but doable. With spring and backing washers it is adjustable and locks firmly in place. Maybe other people also do it this way but I didn't see any photos

looks good, bro

Brilliant. I will be stealing this idea. I may or may not bother with the heat shrink, but it looks great.

thanks for the idea! :)

I had to mess with the plastic at the back of the light but 2 inch fits and probably 2.25.

Nice! I did a similar mounting job with 1/4 aluminum flat stock. Fairly easy to shape, lightweight and rust free :-)

sturovo- fwiw that's the OE fresh air feed for the intake you ran the hot side IC pipe through.

Mobius 06-12-2012 09:52 AM

Mazda never sealed the air intake to the hood, though, so it was never really a cold air intake. Enough intercooler and you can pull air from anywhere. FWIW - that's where the 04/05 mazdaspeed piping runs. Of course the mazdaspeed didn't have enough intercooler, but I digress.

On my car I trimmed a bit of the fender liner so that fresh air could still get to the filter. Maybe one day I'll seal off that area to the hood so that all intake air gets pulled from there. Maybe.

Well spotted Rob!

I guess it is hard to see from the photo but the fresh air feed cutout was significantly enlarged from stock to fit the ic piping.
(Most of the original opening is buried under the light and not usable for piping.)

what are the dimentions of that ic?

20 inch core, 7 inch high, 2.5 inch deep. Overall 28 inches which is about enough to clear the chassis legs on an nb with ordinary silicone 90s.
(It also fills the radiator opening so it does not look like there is an intercooler installed.)

Unfortunately no home depot where I live. :sad2:
The lip is part of the stock euro nb bumper.

Well still, great work with the car and especially the manifold!
