SloS13 build thread
I'm going with a DSM 14b turbo. Still have some things that need to be purchased but I'm on a tight budget so I'm buying a little here, little there. Nothing too interesting to show yet but I thought I'd share.
So far I have: 14b turbo AEM F/IC *installed* rx7 460cc injectors DSM BOV misc. piping miata exhaust flange (salvaged from a stock header) F1 Stage III clutch (too hot in the garage to install lol) Got the F/IC installed and all purdy. Ran a nylon line to join up with a T for the boost gauge so I'll have a single line going through the firewall. http://www.aemfic.com/images/turbo/fic_installed.jpg The only 3 way I'll ever have. http://www.aemfic.com/images/turbo/3way.jpg http://www.aemfic.com/images/turbo/boost_gauge1.jpg http://www.aemfic.com/images/turbo/boost_gauge2.jpg |
I have that pillar mount too, I had to sand out a bit to get my 52mm gauges in. I'm going to be losing that thing too as soon as I get gauges I want.
|
It's actually left over from my S13. Doesnt fit perfect but it's good enough. If I get a bug up my ass, I'll heat it up with a heat gun and try to form it a bit better.
I really like the idea of having gauges in the vents but it's hot as balls here. I really didnt want to resort to the pillar pod but I think it's the best choice for me right now.....I think. |

Oh SNAAAAPPPPPPPPP. My brother mentioned he had a welder so I went to his house to pick it up today. This thing makes my harbor freight flux core look like it came out of a cracker jack box. It's old and crusty but damn does it weld. Chose some random settings and did a quick weld.

ooh la la, weld my pipes!
|
Got rid of all the EGR crap and blocked everything off
http://www.aemfic.com/images/turbo/egrgone.jpg Waiting on my piping went ahead and made my BOV flange. Still learning the welder so I JBwelded over the weld just incase there are any leaks. http://www.aemfic.com/images/turbo/bovflange.jpg Here's my manifold so far. Right now it's just 2 stock 1.8L head flanges bolted together so I don't warp anything when the welding starts http://www.aemfic.com/images/turbo/mani1.jpg |
Got the gauges finished up. VDO boost gauge and my new panel meter with 0.01 accuracy for the wideband display. wewt
The meter was a bit too bright so I put 2 layers of tint in there. I also heated up the gauge pod so I cold mold in the panel a bit. Just dropped off a loaner flywheel at the machine shop too. http://www.aemfic.com/images/turbo/gauges1.jpg |
you couldnt just find a round voltmeter? :gay:
|
I want a welder...I'd like to know how to weld too lol.

Got my manifold bits in so I started fabbing. Figure it'll take about 3-4 2hr sessions. Yeah I'm slow. Ordered some oil lines today. I got everything I need now except post-turbo exhaust parts. I'll order them with my next check which will all I need. Ordering is the easy part. Fabbing and tuning = teh hard shits. Took me a while to get some settings right. The GLOB of weld is ugly yet functional.
So far.... http://www.aemfic.com/images/turbo/manifold1.jpg http://www.aemfic.com/images/turbo/manifoldweld.jpg Using a piece from the stock manifold's collector to connect manifold to turbo. Still needs a bit of work before welding. http://www.aemfic.com/images/turbo/collector.jpg |

dopeness, ghetto builds ftw

How is that gonna spool a turbo  no opening.
Then what's the boost gauge going to hook up to? I hope nobody shit on MY coat. |
Might be better off flipping that IC upside down from how you have it now and using two 90* couplers right off that inlet/outlet to hook those pipes up.

Ah, makes sense now. I think somepeople bend that dryer out of the way, no idea how easy or possible that is in your situation though.
|
have u did any thing with the MAF map yet ??... iv been to busy with work to get it working right with the NB...
|
If the welds hold, who cares how they look. DIY = :)

Then I can go MAP and atmospheric BOV. I've pretty much decided my car isnt leaving the garage until a turbo is strapped to it unless my other car takes a dump or something. |

Mmmm pie cuts.

I like pie very nice bud :D

Did some more work on the hot-pipe, still gotta make a few more cuts/welds for it.
The cold pipe is now going into the engine bay, so it's 1/2 done. Did the dual feed fuel rail. Installed injectors Got oil return done removed all stock exhaust. So my list of things to do is shortening: 1. get some fittings to do the feed line 2. Figure out where the turbo is gonna go and finish the manifold 3. Get a GTX PCV valve 4. Make downpipe and exhaust 5. Make Intake 6. Finish hot and cold pipes. 7. Tune. |

Makita chopsaw is my friend
http://www.aemfic.com/images/turbo/progress1.jpg Coldpipe - DONE (except for BOV flange) http://www.aemfic.com/images/turbo/progress2.jpg Coldpipe http://www.aemfic.com/images/turbo/progress3.jpg Hotpipe is done except for some possible leaks and IACV port http://www.aemfic.com/images/turbo/progress4.jpg Muffla http://www.aemfic.com/images/turbo/progress5.jpg New injectors http://www.aemfic.com/images/turbo/progress6.jpg Dual feed fuel rail http://www.aemfic.com/images/turbo/progress7.jpg Box of shit http://www.aemfic.com/images/turbo/progress8.jpg My world http://www.aemfic.com/images/turbo/progress9.jpg http://www.aemfic.com/images/turbo/progress10.jpg http://www.aemfic.com/images/turbo/progress11.jpg |
You have them backwards, hotside is from the turbo, coldside is from the throttle body. It looks like functional DIY good stuff. I envy your shop. Things would be so much nicer to just be able to have a floor jack instead of a scissor POS for example. Let alone a welder, chop saw, and enough room to string my shit from hell to high water.
|
hahahah goddamnit. I knew that i'm just retarded. Yeah I looove having a garage and room to work. My wife has been a trooper and has been parking her car outside for the past 5 weeks so I'd have room to work. The red MIG is technically my brothers but i'm borrowing indefinitely.
The chop-saw I got for $65 at an estate sale. The floorjack was like $30 at wal-mart. My first evar turbo install was done behind a muffler shop over 2 weeks in the freezing ass cold. Second turbo install was done at a friend's apartment complex parking space. Third was done at my previous apartment's parking space which was for some reason half sand and mud. I've done a few friends' turbo kits in their apartment parking spaces. Fourth and now fifth are done in my garage. Before the garage the only power tools I owned was a corded drill and a dremel. |
I borrow my roommates cordless drill, use my dremel, otherwise a scissor jack, ramps, and a set of metric wrenches get me through the day. I'm fortunate to have a sloped paved parking spot. No dirt and clay for me.
|
can i have your box of shit? one mans trash is anothers treasure... what is that hose going through the firewall from the turbo?
|
by shit I didnt mean like worthless shit. I never throw away ANYTHING. Never know when you might need something. Hey you're right down the road from me (columbia). Howdy neighbor!
|
SloS13 with a welder = armed and dangerous... no metal is safe :D
Makin' progress- so your hot side pipe requires cutting out the hood support/framework right? |
Your going to burn up the bushings with the turbo mounted like that, unless you have stupid amounts of oil pressure

Heres a question, how much space is available for the pipes when doing a over the radiator style installation?
|
not a heck of a lot. I had to cut part of my hood skin up and screwed my paint up in the process (caused 2 bubbles on top of hood) ARGHGHG. I used an angle grinder when I should have used a dremel.
I'll try to take some better pics of that. |

well i knew it wasn't worthless thats why i wanted it :bigtu: i have to go to columbia nearly evereday for classes but have only ever seen one mariner miata parked on main st all the time. Nvm about the hose with the thermal wrap, it looked like it was entering your turbo but then i saw that it goes behind it. Any plans on bracing the manifold or no?
I've cut some stock to use for bracing but im not really sure if I need it. The downside to bracing would be that it would be more of a pain in the ass to tighten/loosen the turbo from the manifold b/c the braces would be in the way of the wrench to an extent. I will probably re-consider it before I do the final tightening on everything. |
Got some more work on the downpipe done. Should be working on the exhaust tomorrow.
intake done except for welding http://www.aemfic.com/images/turbo/progress2b.jpg Oil feed wasnt nearly as difficult as I thought it'd be http://www.aemfic.com/images/turbo/progress2a.jpg |
|
nice looking dp, keep up the good work
|
DP looks good tacked up, gonna be crazy once you get done with it though :)
|
I *might* try and run a separate dump tube. Havent quite decided yet but I gotta get this shit on the road by Friday.
|
Very sexy....im kinda curious to see how well the FIC works.
|
Small, pictureless update:
Tonite I worked on the exhaust. Got the downpipe 90% welded up and started on the rear section (flange, flex-pipe, first muffler, straight pipe). It's a bit crooked so I'm gonna have to cut it and re-do a bit, no biggie. Gonna fab up a bracket that connects the DP to the transmission to keep the weight of some of the exhaust off of it. Thats gonna be a bitch but I've made up my mind i'm gonna do it....well at least eventually. ;) Got my hot and cold pipes smoothed out some, added an IACV hookup for the cold pipe made out of some old bicycle handlebars LOL. Painted both the pipes then I remembered I forgot to put on the BOV flange. gosh deng. So I gotta sand some paint off and find a good spot for it. |
where did all the pictures go?
|
ah shit. I think my domain expired or some shit. :(
|
lol, better post them again, pics or it didnt happen
|
in for pics
