Smoke test, passes through CHRA?

A customer of mine with a genuine 2876 which has been heavily ported and has a 6psi actuator just did a smoke test to figure out why he never makes more than 5psi, even with no boost signal on the WG actuator canister.

He blocked the intercooler end of the hotside piping, and the turbo inlet, and fed smoke in through a nipple on the hotside piping, to his surprise, smoke came out of the manifold>turbo flange connection.

He tells me that it has no exhaust leak when the engine is running, but that isnt what concerns me.

Is it normal that a smoke test like this will reveal smoke travelling from the compressor housing to the exhaust housing via the chra?

Rings could be gone, they were on my CHRA. I'm not exactly sure where these rings lie, but I know mine were replaced with the type from a motorsports turbo made of fancy-metal.
