Default Can I run an oil restrictor on DSM T25?

I get some smoking from my exhaust from time to time and I am wondering if an oil restrictor would HARM anything. It may not be necessary but I would still like to try it for a while.

I use them in every turbo system I am involved with. Never had a turbo failure or any smoking issues.

I just found a good writeup on how to make one:
http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=171317

But I think this is the ticket:
http://www.atpturbo.com/Merchant2/me...egory_Code=OIL

My CHRA is also from a DSM T25. I thought though that there really isn't any "pressure" in the oil... that on our engines it's a very slow flow based on where we tap for the oil source.

Is your valve breather line routed into the intake? Check that line to see if there's oil in there... maybe the source?

I'm not sure about the oil in the intake but I will be building/buying a catch can in the next few weeks as well as installing a restrictor (just so happens to be the one you provided a link for). I want to cover all bases.

IMHO, it is probably about the same price to buy the ATP restrictor ($14) vs building your own like the DSM guy fabricated.

I'm using a .060 restrictor w/the t3. I got it delivered for under $15. I've built a pvc catch can setup using 2" pvc parts, two 90 brass fittings, a straight brass fitting on the bottom with some clear vinyl hose plugged for draining and inspection. Used some black plastic primer and paint. It fits neatly behind the exhaust side headlight and appears to work well so far. The right angle fittings appear to work just fine for trapping the oil. Got out of tHD for under $15. - rob

About 8 bucks delivered for this and just run a .060 drillbit through it (its brass and takes 2 seconds to drill larger).

umm this might be a dumb question, but why would you need this?

and more importantly do I need one for a 16g/1.6motor?

No dumber than some I've asked. Read his first post, he's smoking occasionally and wonders if it might be because there's enough pressure in the oil feed that it's being forced past some of the turbo seals. Also check the link to the DSMTuners post... read the first paragraph in the post.

I was considering running a pressure gauge after a restrictor to see the actual pressures. But I know at WOT my oil gauge goes off the charts.

interesting, is there any way to know or calculate before you install if you might need it? or is it needed based on the particular turbo/engine/setup?

I never thought it would be possible to over oil a turbo but if the pressure is high enough to be pumping more in than is draining it makes sense.

It's talked about in Corky's book. I don't have it handy, but he does mention the use of a .060" restrictor in it. And testing the pressures and whatnot.

ok from Maximum Boost:

Idle, hot Min Pressure 5 PSI, Min Flow(Gal/min) 0.1
Maximum Load, Min Pressure 25 Min Flow 0.5.

They recomend a restrictor with dia .055-.065"

Since we idle at around 30psi, you can see why a lot of guys go with a restrictor, especially with -4AN lines over -3AN lines.

Yeah, that's an NPT fitting...I bet your Mitsu. turbo is 10 or 12mm x 1.5 metric.
