Default Some garrett GTX series turbos close ups

Thought some of you might find these pics interesting.
Not sure if repost, but a quick search brings up nothing.

Since our recent discussions about chinacharger vs authentic and how wheel design might have a lot to do with midrange flow, I pay close attention to different wheel designs now.
The new gtx wheels look, well, interesting:

The GTX wheels use "New Aero" but they do not mention the extended tips of the wheel as a feature. Probably because BW uses this feature. Its a greats simple way to get a little more air flow from a compressor wheel

The Exducer on the GTX3071R is 73.45mm (2.05mm bigger than claimed) and the exducer on the GTX3076R is 78.7mm (2.1mm bigger than claimed)




Taking a look at the compressor maps you can see that now customers looking to make 400WHP may opt for the faster spooling GTX3071R instead of the GT3076R. The GTX3076R looks like a 35R now and as long as it still spools fast, it may be a great option for those torn between the two sizes.

Again they don't mention the extended tip size, but the GTX3582R measures 84.7mm, which is 2.2mm bigger than claimed.


Looking at the compressor maps you can see, just like the other turbos that now customers thinking of doing a GT4088R, now might consider the GTX3582R. Its almost 100 engine HP more than the old one! Again it all depends on when it spools up.







The full 11 blade compressor wheel is very nice looking, but does it work is the question! Garretts info says:
Forged, fully-machined compressor wheel featuring next-generation GTX aerodynamics * Compressor wheel is 11 full-blade design.

As i mentioned before they say nothing about the extended tips! You can see above the side profile showing the tips and how they protrude out from the wheel.

I know this is not proven power, but look for results very soon!
I found it interesting that Garret "underrates" some of the sizes they claim, and actual size is actually bigger.
Also the part about extended tips that they don't say anything about was interesting.

Kinda sounds like they make their turbo's look less on paper so that they live up to expectations?

Just thinking out loud.

will be ordering when they come in small frame sizes.... 2871R specifcally.

Damit it all to hell. This is making me want to go read through my propulsion book. We only covered axial compressors, like jet engines and didn't even touch the section that applies to turbos. I like the billet wheel though, and the full bladed design. More fins that you can see is just somehow sexier, all performance aspects aside. I'll sit and wait for the smaller frames as well.

prediction:

all GT series turbos will get cheap ported inlets and be called GTX turbos... just like all the T series turbos that grew a mysterious G

Just FYI, a GTX3071R with a .63 housing will spool ~100 rpm sooner and have the same top end...

Only difference between the 3071R and the 2871R is the turbine - a 2871R .86 is a 21lb/hr turbine combo, the 3071R .63 is a 20lb/hr turbine combo. Virtually no difference between those two turbos. The compressor maps and wheels are identical.

There's another thing that's different...the price.

Tial told me the 3071 is cheaper to produce but 'they' didn't think it right to have it be cheaper than a turbo that's 'lesser' on the turbo food chain.
