Stock 1.6......How much boost?

How much boost can a stock 1.6 engine handle without having to do any major engine work?

Bond 02-13-2010 01:07 AM

17.3psi for 17 minutes, then it goes boom.

rider384 02-13-2010 01:15 AM

Bond, you're an idiot, everyone knows it's 17.2 and if you go 1/10th of a pound over that it detonates. :jerkit:

Bond 02-13-2010 01:19 AM

It may detonate, but it will last for 17 minutes :noob:

wittyworks 02-13-2010 01:24 AM

Basically they're Saying it all varies between motors, and how good your tune is. And you'll figure out how much boost is too much if you read about half of the threads here.

Diablovt750 02-13-2010 01:29 AM

why cant anyone ever answer questions honestly? Do you think that answer of yours did anything for me other than piss me off? People like you are why I hate forums! I am only here for the select few that can actually pass on some useful info. Please be serious!

THERE'S NO WAY TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION. YOU HAVE REQUESTED THE IMPOSSIBLE. And I'm not being funny. Really, your question of "how much boost can a 1.6 take" can be answered a thousand ways. On a tiny T25 300ZX turbo, you can hit 17psi ALL DAY, but on a gt4088R, 17psi will destroy it. Then of course, there's the several other factors as to intercooler type / charge temps, fuel injectors/pressure/rail, engine management, downpipe/manifold, etc etc.

SO PLEASE STOP ASKING QUESTIONS THAT CAN'T BE ANSWERED AND NOT EXPECT TO TAKE IT UP THE ASS.

moooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar booost!

SKMetalworks 02-13-2010 01:37 AM

First boost is a relative term. 10 psi on a GT 2560 does not = 10 psi GT30R. Its better to think of WHP which our blocks tend to start bending rods around 240-250 whp. So safely i would expect 220 whp (although we have had failures this low).

This sounds like a job for... https://www.miataturbo.net/forum/ima...s/supermod.gif

Ok, allow me to answer your question honestly and directly: There is no single, straightforward, direct answer.

(That was the answer.)

Too many variables affect the performance of the turbo system, the engine's ability to turn air into power, the engine's ability not to destroy itself, etc.

One of the most important things you need to realize is that there is simply not a fixed relationship between PSI and power, even assuming the engine itself to be a constant.

I could run 50 PSI reliably on a stock bottom end if I simply installed cams with 0.1" lift. I'd probably make about 40 HP.

Conversely, I could break all four pistons in half with only 10 PSI if I tried hard enough.

Even if fuel and ignition timing are absolutely optimal, the exhaust is wide open, etc., you'll still get more power using, say, a GT2860 turbo at 10 PSI than you will out of a GT2554 at 13 PSI. Until you understand why this is, I'd suggest not experimenting to see how much boost your engine will take.

I cannot strongly enough suggest that you obtain this book and read it: Amazon.com: Maximum Boost: Designing, Testing, and Installing Turbocharger Systems (Engineering and Performance) (9780837601601): Corky Bell: Books

It's all in the tune. Read\Read more\Read more again\think\post in that order, or you will never be taken seriously.

Joe knows all, get that book.

magnamx-5 02-13-2010 11:20 AM

given your knowledge of boost i predict any positive manifold pressure would thrash even a factory boosted motor so plz, either read and learn for yourself or /end yourself and go drive a kia.

Clos561 02-13-2010 11:32 AM

depends on turbo size, two turbos can flow 10psi but each one has a different flow rate, how much air is being pushed in at that psi which raises cylinder pressure = boom. a friend of mine that is on this forum is pushing 16psi with water/meth injection and his shit is running hard. stock 1.6l in a 90'

On a good tune, the stock motor is good for a reliable 200-220rwtq. anything above that and you're playing with fire.

It is also said, anything above 12psi regardless of the mass airflow behind it and the rings will fail, however, I have seen no real evidence of this, it's the rule of thumb that FM and BEGi adhere to.

Blaize 02-13-2010 03:03 PM

Right then, on to more pressing matters gentlemen. I have been wondering for some time, How much do heavy things weigh?

Diablovt750 02-13-2010 03:17 PM

Im an idiot but I have to "get more better knowledge" Learn how to speak before you talk shit!

Thank you Braineack! You seem to be the only person in this forum that answers anything seriously. What people dont realize is that they were once new to this as well, so how am I supposed to learn when you guys just give me smart ass answers and mock me?

popopopop 02-13-2010 03:20 PM

I've been here two years, lurk everyday and still learning. See my post count? Use the search function :/.

Twas a joke dude, you could have exerted some microscopic form of energy by simply clicking the search tab and easily found your answer.

Besides, don't get your panties in a bunch, I already received a spanking for my rude and lascivious comment.

Boy good thing 18PSI didnt read this, you really would have caught some heat!

Diablovt750 02-13-2010 05:53 PM

There is more useless crap in the forum than there is actual information, so it would be a waste of my time to read through it and sift through the bullshit to get to the good stuff! It is so much easier to just ask, and hope that someone is intelligent enough to give me a straight answer.

So far Braineack is the only helpful person in the forum.

Braineack 02-13-2010 05:58 PM

You're just lucky I wasn't in a mood :)

read through the DIY FAQ and strap on the brass balls.

Go to Miata.net if you want to be spoon fed! They may even be able to provide you with remedial reading and forum search classes too. :fawk:

you're a useless crap, and there is no straight answer to your question, hence the sarcastic replies. put an actual iota of effort into your research

rofl dude you have no idea. just becouse most of the information on turbo effeciencys and tunning ease etc fly over your head on a technical lvl doesnt mean you shouldnt try to learn it all becouse if you dont you are forever doomed to let someone else do your work and research. It is newb threads like this one that water down the content on this site.

So you thought making a new thread, creating more "useless crap", was the best idea?

Why should we spoon feed you answers because you are too lazy, yes lazy, to search yourself. Your reason for not searching is even more BS. You will not make it here, and we won't miss you.

Have you even read the FAQs? Maybe searched the build threads for 1.6Ls to see what everyone else is doing?

Uncle Arthur 02-13-2010 08:47 PM

The reason nature gave you two eyes and two ears as opposed to one mouth is that you look and listen twice as much as you speak. In this place, that is I must admit a harsh lesson all must learn.

Perhaps you have, perhaps you won't.... but then again - we all do. :)
