Smile changing a 94 M

I am new to any forum. I g have a 94 M and am upgrading by installing a engine, transmission, ecm from a 2004 MSM. I want to be as trouble free as possible. I would like to use the gauge set from the MSM do I need to change the steering column to that of the 2004 MSM. If yes will the 2004 steering column fit the 94?

Any help especially from anyone that has done similar would be much appreciated.

Hopefully you also have the entire wiring harness (nose to tail) from the '04 donor, and are ready for some serious splicing. Plus the whole fuel system including all of the in-tank components. Plus every single sensor in the entire vehicle, even the trivial little ones like the fuel tank pressure sensor.

To be honest, you will probably have a far easier time discarding the stock ECU, retaining your original transmission, and using an aftermarket ECU such as a Megasquirt or an Adaptronic. To install the ECU from an '04 into a '94 chassis is a highly non-trivial task.

Honestly, I'm debating as to how I would approach this if it were my car... I understand the physchological appeal of retaining the original ECU from the '04 donor, though if you ever plan on seriously upping the power, it will become a limiting factor anyway.

There's no easy way around this: you're taking on a pretty serious project here.

If you decide to do it the way you propose, yes- the steering column from an NB will mechanically fit into an NA. Lots of wiring differences, but you'll be swapping out pretty much every wire in the car anyway.

Joey P, why keep the original 94 transmission? The 6-speed is better, no?

If he really sticks with the stock MSM turbo and ECU, he's not gong to make enough torque to kill an NA 5-speed.

The 5-speed will also give him a more favorable gearing for daily-driver use, as the 5th gear in it is .814 as opposed to .843 in the 6-speed. (Yes, 6th gear in a 6-speed is a "shorter" gear than 5'th in a 5 speed.)

Why do this??? Swap msm engine/ trans...custom build megasquirt strictly for this application. I bet it would be easier.

I suppose but the 6-speed is favorable, methinks.

The factory MSM turbo setup is molded from turds, anyone who uses that needs to get a job.
