stock plug wires (NGK) + boost?

I literally JUST bought new wires right before I decided to go FI.

They are brand new... 7mm NGK blue wires. Will they be good to run 14PSI? 230whp at most.

Or should I buck up... cashola is running thin for the project and I don't want to put these to waste.

You'll be fine.

falcon 04-29-2010 11:59 PM

Cool.. good to know.

judging by the fact that over half the cars here are still on stock ignition I'm going to agree that you'll be fine lol.

Working well for me so far, though I'm not quite up at the power level you are asking about, but so far so good. My car's recently developed a bit of backfiring at high rpms under boost and I think it may be weak spark related, but my wires are ~40k miles so time for a change. I have no idea how to actually quantify whether a set of wires are causing any hindrance to the setup... As yours are new, I think you're good to go.

Close up your gaps, like .025 or smaller. Stock coils suck. I'm surprised half the cars here are still on stock ignition, COPs are both cheap (do it yourself) or stupid easy (buy my kit).

ThePass 04-30-2010 03:33 AM

I'm curious whether there are any specific symptoms that can be attributed to a less than capable ignition system? Or do most of the guys who switch to COPs do so before they reach a point where the ignition system is falling short? I ask so that if I get there, I'll recognize it...

ssmith 04-30-2010 03:40 AM

I got nasty spark blowout on the dyno (12psi, stock coils .035"), aside from that I didnt notice anything really bad.

I had .028 gaps and spark blowout at 13psi. Closed them to .024 and it worked OK. Switched to COPs, opened them to .040 and never had another problem again.

I was having spark blowout at anything above 9psi on my stock coils even with my spark plugs gapped to .024. I have since switched to cops and am hoping I wont have the issues any more.

I am going to buy the kit. I'm just short on cash right now. I am basically setting up a full track car for Solo1/hillclimb from scratch. So the budget is thin. COPS are the way to go, I know that. And I will be getting some within the next few months.

Now here's another question related to that. Is it going to be beneficial to get a re-tune when I install the COPS?

When's the setup for the 01 cars being released?

wayne_curr 04-30-2010 01:06 PM

How noticeable is spark blowout? I'm at 14psi right now and It seems to pull hard to redline in 1st through 3rd. No hiccups that I can notice. Haven't been to redline in 4th yet but I imagine it'll work fine as well.

therieldeal 04-30-2010 01:13 PM

has anyone here ever attempted switching to a DSM coil pack? they are cheap and readily available, and DSM guys run them to nearly 500whp. EVO guys with COP's even upgrade to 1st gen coil packs.

i'll be running a DSM coil pack on my escort this season, should be a nice upgrade over my single coil/dizzy

I've thought about it several times. I have a PILE of dsm coil packs at my buddy's house that I've been itching to test.

I'll take one :)

therieldeal 04-30-2010 01:23 PM

the stock miata computer may not feed them enough dwell, but for people running standalone it would be a simple swap...

Jeff_Ciesielski 04-30-2010 01:38 PM

I put out the word to my friend eric who is currently in posession of the coils. We'll see where this goes.

therieldeal 04-30-2010 01:46 PM

they are 4g63 coils, right? these are the good ones, the 420A coils are ok but not nearly as epic.

All we ever dealt with was 1g awd cars, so yes :). The 420a makes the baby jesus weep.
