Stock turbo with external waste gate?

I'm starting to piece together a turbo setup for my lotus 7. Because of space I am looking for a turbo with an external waste gate. The added flexibility will help with positioning.

I tried Google but mainly found links to people wanting to convert their wrx to external...

Any help with good miata based turbos without an internal waste gate is appreciated!

Most people just wire or weld the internal wastegate flapper shut, and then use an external wastegate.

Ya. I did that on my rx7. Was hoping for an exhaust housing that I could braze a vband clamp to... Without a plate etc..

Which turbo are you considering? Many turbos have aftermarket turbine housings that are set up for external wastegate. For example, I have a TD04HL-20t from a Caliber SRT4, and use an aftermarket turbine housing made by Kinugawa that doesn't have an internal wastegate.

I looked at a few Volvo td04hl models but they all had internal waste gates

Ideally I want to be in the 220-300hp area so gt28s and gt3071 has been on the radar.

Pricewise-trying to avoid what a new Garrett costs so changing a housing doesn't help the budget :/

For reference, I make 230 whp at 9 psi on a TD04HL-20t with a 6cm turbine housing, and it doesn't run out of efficiency until 20 psi or so, so it's definitely capable of more. I hear that TD04's are pretty cheap used (I got mine free, so I don't know the used market), and the turbine housing was a little but over $100.

If you're really on a budget, I would think that more focus should be put on packaging an internal wastegate. Do you already have a manifold? Do you have the fabrication know-how to make a manifold, or are you looking for off-the-shelf?

I have the skills and plan to make a ram style manifold that sits lower in the frame.

I'll look and see what I can find. I figured some oem must have gone external with their wg

the ones that did, are all ancient.
most (maybe all?) affordable modern are all iwg from the factory.
good luck.
