Stupid Newbie Question

OK - I know this might sound stupid to some people - but I just have to ask.

What is the text code mean on a turbo??

I have seen T25's 16g's & more turbo's made by a bunch of different manufacturers.

And looking at the pics - they seem to vary on the outlet position of the cold side.

Basically Im looking at a stainless manifold that fits a 16g/t25 - can I use any 16g or t25 turbo on this manifold?

Thanks for any advice :)

You can only use the T25 from a DSM that has the circular compressor inlet flange like a 16G. This is very hard for people to understand, the turbo off a 2G DSM is called a T25 but it does not have a standard T25 turbine inlet (rectangle), it has a round inlet like a 16G. When talking about T25s it needs to be specified whether it's a DSM T25 or a Nissan or something. One fits where a 16G does, one does not.

OK, now im really confused - what is DSM?

I was thinking about using a T25 TD04, I figure I will have to re-clock it - the intake on the cold side is pointed in the same direction as the exhaust manifold flange.

By the way - I was smiling when I saw u had a VTR..
I sold my 02 VTR last year & have been sad ever since

Diamond star motor's aka dodge mitsubishi, AMC, plymouth- Lazzer, stealth, Talon, eclipse.

DSM more commonly around here refers to the first and second generations of the Mitsubishi Eclipse, Eagle Talon, Plymouth Laser that were sold in the states in the early-mid nineties. DSM=Diamond Star Motors. Diamond for Mitsu, Star for Chrysler.

The nomenclature for turbo's are very confusing at first. It will start to make sense. There are really only 2 kinds of T25's we talk about around here when it comes to what will mate with what manifolds and DP's.

The first is the 2G (2ndGeneration) DSM .48/.49 T25. That turbine and compressor housings look like the first two pictures below. This is the turbo that the turbine housing flanges are the same as the 16g. Notice that the manifold flange is rectangular, but the hole the exhaust gas comes out of is round, and the DP flange is triangular/diamond... and that the turbine/wastegate paths are separated.

The second is what we call Nissan or Standard T25. Whether it's T2/T25/T25/GT2554r/GT2860r, they all have the same flanges on the turbine housing. They look like the third and fourth pics. The compressor housing in the 4th pic is from a DSM, but the turbine housing is Nissan/Standard T25. Notice that the actual manifold flange looks like the same rectangular shape... but the size and bolt pattern is different... and the hole the exhaust gas comes out of is square. The DP flange is also a weird shape with 5-bolts and the turbine/wastegate gas is not separated.

Over the years there have been many OEM applications for various T25's with differnt funky flanges and shapes of their respective compressor/turbine housings. Volvo's, Saab's and a few others have used T25's. The constant is that the CHRA's are all pretty much identical.

CHRA = (center housing rotating assembly) that supports the shaft and cools the turbo??? Is that correct?

^That's correct.
