Supercharging?

i just bought a 92 ford escort gt, i heard it has the same engine as the miata? It's the 1.8l dohc, i believe it is a BP? anyway, i have an eaton m62 laying around and was planning on throwing that onto the engine. I'm planning on also installing a large IC and some sort of fuel management along with a wideband o2. so my question is how much boost will i be able to run? i was planning on the stock 8, or maybe up to 12psi. can an otherwise stock motor take it?

Thanks

sure...

good luck with a DIY S/C. It's far more of a pain than DIY turbo.

FYI, my car has a '92 escort GT engine in it... The stock one died.

Welcome to the forum... it's always good to see a blower guy around. Plenty of knowledge here, just do two things first.

Read the FAQ Sticky located on the DIY page. (It'll get you started. Lots of stuff there applies to blowers.)
Read the "Hey NOOB" announcement at the top of every forum page.

How much boost depends on the tune you give it. How much horsepower can you get out of an M62 is a better question? Read this thread at miata.net. If you're looking more than 200whp out of it, be prepared to go full standalone and spend some serious time tuning.

thanks for the welcome. i don't understand why everyone thinks that supercharging is so hard to do as compared to a turbo setup.... maybe after i do this i will understand why. I'm thinking about running a very capable piggyback (any suggestions?), or a full standalone. (i'm running SDS 4 on my built starion) I'll try to keep you guys updated on my progress, but i may just end up going turbo as i have a few t3's laying around too. BUT, you see too many turbo cars around as it is, and another reason to go SC is my first car was a corrado g60 (supercharged)

:gay: And you still are considering a supercharger? I love the Corrado, just not the G60...you have more patience than I

i never had a problem with the G60 actually, my corrado had 200,000 miles on it with an original stock motor and the g60 was rebuilt at 60,000 miles. the only problem i ever had with the car is that it overheated once because the water pump impeller broke. other then that it was a great car, then again so it my 91 mazda protege that i got for free. (hence why i bought the escort, otherwise i hate american cars)

Good to see you on the forum, escort gt (you know me, I drive a white miata). I don't really have much to add to the thread since I'm still a noob, but I've got a 29x9x2.75 IC w/2.5 inlet if you're looking for one. From what I've gathered reading this forum and miata.net, you'll probably want to go turbo if you want 300whp (and you'll want those gtx rods at the least). The best S/C kits available for miatas seem to top out around 220whp. Flyinmiata.com and fastforwardsuperchargers.com have the S/C kits, if you want to see what they use for engine management. I think the FM kit uses a hydra stand alone.

hey what's going on! i'll most likely pick up that ic from you. give me a call, (you know the area code)915-9381. 220whp in a fwd would be pretty good for me, but i know in the long run i'll want more so i'll most likely be going turbo. I've heard good things about hydra, thats a standalone right?

Just wanted to let you know that a DIY supercharger setup isn't as difficult as people are letting on. Mine wasn't. I'm running an M62 at 7psi currently putting out around 160hp. The guy I bought my blower from had it running 12psi in another miata with standalone ecu putting down 220hp. PM me if you have any questions, or check out my cardomain - http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2667914/1

It's not hard to supercharge a Miata. Nobody is saying that. It's just a lot harder and more expensive than a turbo when you start looking at over 200whp or so. The limits of the MP62 are still being discovered, but so far nobody has cared to take one as far as it will go. You just need to pick a power goal, determine how much money you want to spend, and decide the best way to get there. If you find that one of those variables won't work with the other, something has to bend.

Just read this thread: http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=244437
