Surely this has been asked before... k04?
Alright, i can't seem to find anything about this on MT.net that's actually related to a miata, so i guess I'll just ask.
Anyone running or know anything about running a k04 (stock for mazdaspeed3/6) on a miata 1.8? I own a mazdaspeed6 and know my way around the MZR platform pretty well. The k04 in that application runs stock at 14.5 psi, and is good til 18-20psi (I never ran more than 17), i've seen a few even run up to 22psi out of it. Most people compare the k04 to the gt25's it looks like, and the numbers line up pretty well. I can pick up a non-smoking k04 for under $400 so I was just looking for a little more supportive info before I make a move. I expect I could make 250-270hp with one running a MS and rx8 injectors. I've also considered e85, as that's popular in the MZR realm as well. Any input and discussion is appreciated. And if I'm wrong, let me know! I'd rather you tell me than have the car do it. |

Without doing any research i'd say obviously your first obstacle would be manifold and downpipe.
I read your intro thread, if you're planning on doing fabrication this is good for you. I can't recall anyone ever using that turbo, but plenty of people have used td04 style turbos with different flanges. I myself even have. Building a simple manifold, downpipe, and exhaust isn't that difficult really. FWIW power output with that turbo on one engine @ X amount of psi will be completely different on another engine. With that being said, don't get to crazy about making more than 250hp on a stock engine and 5 speed. |

I don't think it's been done because you can get cheap, journal bearing, T25-flanged turbos and there are already plenty of T25 manifolds out there with matching exhausts, etc.
So really, there's no point, you'd just be making it harder on yourself. But, if you can fab up your own stuff and already have the stock k04 lying around etc., then I see no reason to not go for it. If not, you can get a decent used T25/T28 for less than that, and then just pick up a Begi/FM manifold or whatever the heck you want- much cheaper and easier all around for a simple DIY build. |
Building a setup around a turbo is a bad idea.

I'm all for experimenting and exploring new ground.
But what will a $400 K04 get you that a $160 Ebay T3 50 trim won't? |

For whatever it's worth, I had a B5 S4 with upgraded twin K04's (stock is K03)
My daily is a Audi TT coupe 225 (with K04) Most "stage 3" software that you can buy runs them at 24psi, so I don't think that is an issue. The K04 is also considered an "upgrade" fr 1.8 A4 (single turbo), but here's what APR has to say about them: The exhaust manifold is mated to a Garrett turbocharger that replaces the stock Triple K K03 turbocharger. We chose to use a Garrett turbocharger in lieu of a Triple K unit for several reasons. First of all, the new Garrett GT-Series is a more efficient design than the old Triple K K-24 turbocharger used by one of our competitors (the K-24's design dates back to the mid 70's). The Garrett turbocharger we have selected is a 1990's design. Also, Garrett turbochargers are available in a wider variety of configurations than the Triple K line, which allowed us to find a more exact match. The Garrett they refer to in this paragraph is GT2860. |
Any info

The K04's are often used on the VW 1.8T to upgrade the factory K03 or K03S turbos. Unless you had a free or dirt cheap turbo, I wouldn't do it. I am not sure about the RWD/AWD configuration, but with the FWD configuration you have a huge DP flange that would be difficult to fit in the confines of the miata engine bay and get the exhaust gasses directed out the back. Again the Audi version might already address this and turn the DP flange to face to the rear of the car.
Post a pic of the Audi K04 if you can. If you have the fabrication equipment and skills and you have realistic goals you could do it, but you will have a much easier time with a T25/28 setup! |
Hola yo tmb estoy apunto de poner un turbo k0422 pero lo que me impide es el colector alguien sabe como se llama?
