T2 to T3 conversion.

So, right now, I've got a begi cast mani, gt2860, and begi downpipe. I've got a t3 flanged, externally gated turbo that I'm going to upgrade to. I can make the downpipe, that's a non-issue. The manifold, however, needs something done. The bell manifolds use the same casting for t2 or t3 manifolds. They just drill/cut it for the specific flange. I have access to a mill, and I know someone that can weld cast iron.
So, the question is, should I modify my existing manifold for a t3 flange and an external wastegate? Or should i just sell it and buy a new one?

Brain is looking to swap from T3 to T2. Maybe you could trade manifold/downpipes with him?

He has a 1.6L

youre going to put an external wastegate flange on youre BEGi manifold?

aw failboat.

fwiw, begi can machine your T2 manifold out to a T3.

Search some old threads by "PatsMX5", he did everything your talking about and came out pretty clean.

Yeah, I talked to corky about that. That's not really the part I'm concerned about. That should be fairly easy. Its the EWG part I'm more concerned about. I've not heard great things about welding to cast iron.

I spoke to Corky about this too. He's never seen a failure yet. I'll be doing the same.

A failure of what, the EWG weld or the T2->T3 conversion?

kenzo42 09-25-2009 10:03 PM

EWG flange weld.

thirdgen 09-25-2009 11:53 PM

So is your GT2860 for sale then?

I've personally seen photos of a cracked EWG weld on a BEGi S5 manifold.

Do you think having the wastegate hang off the DP flange would prove more reliable than welding to cast? Or held on w/ bolts like the FM3:

The FM3 setup would be ideal, with a flange cast into the manifold. Hanging an EWG off the DP is just foolish - all of the downsides of an EWG (cost, weight) with none of the benefit.

kenzo42 09-26-2009 03:42 AM

FM3 EWG flange is not cast into the manifold. It's bolted on. From others experiences, I've heard the bolts would loosen similar to the turbo-manifold bolts issue.

No problem here. Just regular tightening checks like any normal maintenance.

Isn't the s5 tubular?

neogenesis2004 09-26-2009 03:57 PM

No, the S4 and S6 are.

Its about as confusing at video card model denominations.
