T25 (sr20 ) or TD04(wrx ) turbo? help me choose

hi. i owned an NB for about 1 1/2 year and very happy with it. now i would like add some power to the car. so i got two turbo from friends that i can use. The turbos are t25 turbo from sr20 and the TD04 wrx.
My goal is to get about 150-180 whp. and looking for the simple setup. ( this is going to be my first turbo car so everything is new to me :)

I had read the turbo DIY faq but still confused some parts that i dont know what it is.

So far what i understand about turbo needed is:
turbo. ( t25 or TD04 )
mani ( going to order from begi )
downpipe ( order from begi )
injecter ( i can get the 305cc one from friend )
fmu ( gonna buy one use )
blow off valve
intercooler ( ebay intercooler
and going to customer the pipe from friends work at exhausted system )

what else i need ?

leatherface24 08-13-2008 10:29 PM

the diy fag.....hahahahahahahhaahha

an ecu.

tuning.

And for your power goals, the t25 will give plenty of power and spool pretty quick

I don't know how different the TD04 is from a T2 or T3... if the turbine housing is too different, your DP is going to be completely custom... and I don't know if they can fab you a compatible cast manifold.

Just to keep it simple, I'll strongly advise you to go with the T25 which BEGi sells everything for.

Go back and read the FMU section of the FAQ. You have a 99 and will need to completely reconfigure the way the stock fuel system works to be able to hook up an FMU (AFPR).

Those are the major parts you need... don't forget:
FM adjustable timing wheel
ATP Adapters for the T25
Adjustable Wastegate Mount depending on how you clock the compressor
Boost Gauge
Walbro 190lphHp fuel pump
Silicone Vaccum line
Intercooler Piping/Silicone Couplers/T-bolt clamps
BEGi will sell you their ThrottleBody inlet pipe with any kind of bung you want welded to it... which I suggest
How are you going to mount the IC?... you'll need nuts/bolts/metal stock
Fuel filter
Oil feed line/sandwich plate/T-off pressure sender/Oildrain lines... fitting to tap the pan for oil-return
Water Lines/fittings

A good set of tools is also required... not just a complete set of metric stuff, but hacksaw, sanding tools, Dremel, LiquidWrench, loctite, and about 20other things you'll find out as you go.

The wrx turbo uses a 3-bolt flange, which BEGI does not carry AFAIK.

thanks for all the info sam. I will look for the list of those parts. And will continues my slowly learning with diy fiq.

For the intercooler the exhaust system shop gonna install it for me. Also the pipe they can custom it too.

I did check the begi s system power look pretty simple. Should i just buy the begi s system then upgrade it until i hit close to 200 whp?

^Yes. For a '99 and a goal of 200whp... your best move currently is a BEGi"S" and the Zoom3. You'll save the cost of the FMU when you buy the "S" because the Zoom3 won't need it.

Your best bet for 200whp (as Stephanie at BEGi will tell you):

BEGi"S" GT2554r
Options: intercooler/BOV
ZOOM3+PnP harness

Probably total about $3k.

After that's in and running, start looking for a used Xede+injectors to turn up to 230-240whp.

You're also gonna need a clutch at over 160whp or so.

Tell them to leave the turbo off the -S kit and save yourself like $800; use the Sr20 t25.

thirdgen 08-14-2008 08:56 AM

I have an NB and I use an SR20 t25 and am very pleased with it. I am right now at the HP that is your goal, and there is room for upgrade when the time is right. Go with the SR20 and you won't be dissapointed. As far as controlling fuel...get a Flyin Miata Voo-Doo box and leave your stock injectors in there if you want to keep things simple. Run 93 octane, a big intercooler, 6 psi of boost, and don't retard your timing. You'll be impressed with the difference. Just my recommendations if you want to keep it real simple and cheap.

Oh, snap. I forgot he already had a turbo.
That's an even better deal.

BEGi"S" w/no turbo
Options: BOV+IC
ZOOM3+PnP harness.

Depending on exactly how capable the ZOOM3 is, you'll be sitting good at around 200whp with some slightly larger inectors.

afk 08-14-2008 11:51 AM

that's great. going to talk with stephan about the order tomorrow.
Also getting a used Voo-Doo box soon too.

Samnavy wat is zoom3?

The_Pipefather 08-14-2008 06:42 PM

I have a TD04 turbo. Requires a lot of custom work to fit it. Read my build thread for more info.

I feel that the effort I put in is well worth it in terms of performance and engine flexibility (I get full boost at ~2500 rpm and hold it to redline even with a tiny 2.25" exhaust and 1.75" intercooler) , but I'd suggest a T25 too since you seem to be a beginner.

samnavy 08-14-2008 08:28 PM

BEGi is about to release a PnP piggyback for 99+ cars that will do fuel and timing on stock-sized injectors.

How do you think a T25 compares to a 2554 or a 2560? Just curious because I've been considering doing just that.

EDIT: And sorry for bumping an old thread, thought I only went back a page or two.

That first graph looks like HP was going to continue climbing but he let off before 5500. Any story on that?

Braineack 10-06-2008 03:46 PM

Mr. Navy thought he heard knock.

jwarriner 10-06-2008 03:52 PM

Well seems like pretty good potential regardless. I am so desperate for any sort of speed I'd take 135hp if it's all I could get.

Braineack 10-06-2008 03:54 PM

But if I did my research correctly, it's basically a journal bearing gt2554.

Saml01 10-06-2008 05:08 PM

All I can contribute to this thread is that I love my T25 and actually very happy with the decision. I live in NY and I need spool off the line. 12psi by 3k rpm on the factory cat, is plenty. I am very excited to see what happens to the spool with a metal core im installing this weekend.
