T3/T4 Hybrid Turbo too big?

I am looking at a t3/t4 hybrid turbo for $200 and i was wondering if you guys think that it is too big for the 1.8 in the miata. Will the lag be unbearable? i have stock internals and will be running the megasquirt pnp. so i will probably be running around 12 or 13 psi.

cjernigan 09-03-2007 10:09 PM

Are you referring to the chinese T3/T4s on ebay?
There are a few guys running those turbos Markp being one of them. Search for "ghettocharger". They spool decent and are capable of alot of power.

wes65 09-03-2007 10:24 PM

yeah, thats what im referring to, are they crap? im still in the learning stages

magnamx-5 09-03-2007 10:28 PM

flip a coin heads you get a good one tails it is crap. That is what i have seen so far.

cjernigan 09-03-2007 10:32 PM

Like magna said, some are good, some suck. It's your choice. You'd be better off saving your money, getting something with a warranty and calling it a day. New T3/T4s are around $500-600, hell a Gt3271 would be badass and they're like $650.

Ben 09-03-2007 10:38 PM

CJ, where are GT3271's only $6XX? That's like half what I usually see them for.

2scoops got his 3071 for 800 or so. :dunno:

wes65 09-03-2007 10:45 PM

so where is a good place to buy from?

cjernigan 09-03-2007 10:45 PM

This is from WOT's price list. Very possible i have my numbers wrong as to what the GT32 is, i just guessed it was a GT3271.

Must be a GT JB turbo :dunno:

The GT BB turbos are 2x the price.

Thanks for showing me though, I'll sacrifice a little spool for $650.

cjernigan 09-03-2007 10:52 PM

Werd on going JB instead of BB. I also like the idea of being able to rebuild my own turbo if i ever have the need. Who knows if some freak shit might blow an oil seal leaving you with a $1000 paperweight.

wes65 09-03-2007 10:52 PM

awesome, thanks. this is the first time i have posted on this forum and you guys are really helpful!

I don't remember any specifics, but Ensign MarkP (the first guy here to throw down on a ChinaCharger aka GhettoCharger from ebay) said that the build quality was suprisingly good HOWEVER the turbo he got was different trims than expected. He is running a 1.9 with a 9k rev limit and it works for him. Probably less than ideal for a stock car. He made a ton of power though before his exhaust mani cracked (and then he shipped off)--300 wheel uncorrected.

I dont doubt they would work well for short term use, but what about trying 10, 20, or 30k miles on them. I dont doubt that my bb gt25 will go 80-100k with good maintenance and a little bit of just being careful not to spin it too fast or heat it up with super high egts, antilag, and running without a filter etc... I bet 95% of those fail before 50k miles. (no real evidence of this though, just first hand knowlege of paying less for something and then a few months later paying more for the real thing)

cjernigan 09-04-2007 12:59 AM

The journal bearing turbo on the diesel motor we tore down this past summer had 170k miles with very minor shaft play compared to many used turbos i've felt since i've owned my car.

wes65 09-04-2007 09:47 AM

thanks guys, you have opened my eyes and i guess $400 more isnt really that much to pay if it means that it will save me major headaches in a few months

Thats because they have been using turbos forever and also, the oil they use is great.
