T3 Turbo Advice

Hi Guys,

I am looking at turbocharging a 1993 Miata 1600cc and am trying to decide on the turbo, I have narrowed it down to 2 T3 turbos and wanted to get some feedback as which would be better and some pros and cons, this is on a rebuilt stock engine and I would be running around 8-10psi initially.

Turbo 1
T3 TURBO CHARGER AR42 Compressor .48 Backend

Turbo 2
T3 TURBO CHARGER AR48 Compressor .63 Backend

Both T3 turbos would be using an internal wastegate.

Comments please.

You've got to be kidding:facepalm:

Rocky64 05-02-2010 04:41 PM

excelent question. i was just thinking about this....

well first i like option 1 because of the "backend"

i like option 2, well, who wouldnt.

you gonna run bandaids? or fm?

if you pm Hustler, i think he would help.

The one on the left looks much nicer. I think I would go with that one. Or the other one. It looks good, too. Oh, now I really don't know.

And you know what they say, "The more you know..."

Those specs mean just about nothing. I am guessing they are from Ebay. What I would do in that regard is search for ebay turbo on here and have a look at the specs of the turbos mentioned there.

What I can tell is that 'back end' refers to the turbine housing AR. As a general rule, the lower AR of the turbine housing, the more focused it is on low boost threshold and minimal lag. The higher it is the more focused on top end flow. But thats also affected by the size of the compressor wheel, the style of the housing, and a few dozen other things.

While I like to concentrate on back ends often as well, you should know that we really aren't just about back ends. We like to know other things as well. I like to pay attention to some trim when I'm sure I'm satisfied with the back end. So tell me, are you a fan of trim, son, or are you a shaft man?

Here are the links for the actual turbos.

Turbo 1

Hope this helps, I am looking for a good all around turbo, something that doesnt spool too quick and then run out at higher rpms, but also not something that spools too late and then there isnt much usable boost.

Braineack 05-02-2010 07:26 PM

turbo 1 is the same I'm running.

mazdaaz3 05-02-2010 07:29 PM

Braineack, give me your impressions of it then, infact all input is welcome.

Braineack 05-02-2010 07:29 PM

read my posts about it...

These would be the relevant specs. As opposed to the wonderfully specific AR42 tag.

Inlet Size 2.5"
Outlet Size 2.25"
Type of Bearing WET FLOAT BEARINGS
Oil inlet Size 1/8 NTP
Type of wastegate Internal wastegate (default 8 PSI)
Compressor .42 AR Compressor
Compressor wheel exducer: 60.41mm/ inducer: 43.20mm
Turbine .48 AR Turbine
Turbine wheel Inducer: 62.86mm/ Exducer: 45.74mm
Type of Flange T3
Type of Down Pipe Flange 2.5" v-band

And since Brain is running this turbo, the dyno section is your freind OP.

Thats as much hand-holding as anyone gets around here for good reason.

did you re build before you ran it? how's it holding up?

mazdaaz3 05-02-2010 09:15 PM

Braineack, I was looking at your dyno post with this turbo and it does seem to be falling off around 5000rpm instead of making power up to redline, it does appear to be build boost quickly though, might be a bit to quick for my liking.

I like the idea of a turbo that comes on around 4000-4500 and pulls hard to redline.

You should look into buying a T3/T4 hybrid turbo from a Buick Grand National. '86-87 is the preferred years. They can make around 350rwhp maxed out. .68 A/R hot side and they have tiny inlet compressor wheels and relatively small turbine outlets. Used they sell for under $200 all day long.

this turbo does not spool "quick"...

A t25 spools quick:

it tapers off because the 50 trim compressor wheel is only good for about 27 lb/min, and I'm more or less hitting that around 6000RPM. I have a feeling the power output would look more like the red dyno above if the turbine wasn't so odd.

Mabey this will help some.

Could we get this thread back on topic? I believe it was mainly focused on "backends."

Just trying to keep it on topic ;)
