Default Turbo choices.

I am new to diy turbocharging and after much searching am still not 100% sure I have the right turbo choice.
A little background.I have been building cars for years,mainly street rods so I have a fair old background but this is different.I do not just want to put in a bigger engine as we would with a rod.
I have some experience with engine management having had a rally Opel Manta running engine management for fuel and spark but no turbo.
I have a2001 1.8 vvt Miata(mx5) with 6 speed box and 3.9 Torsen diff'


I intend to;
1.Fit megasquirt ms3 with RX8 injectors and get running nicely.Fit wideband and retune.
2.Pull motor and fit uprated clutch and slightly lightened flywheel.Change timing belt and waterpump,and front and rear seals.May go to electric waterpump at a later stage depending on room etc.
Whilst motor is out fit new uprated radiator and intercooler.
3.Motor back in and run in clutch ,continue with learning megasquirt.
4.Fit turbo etc and dyno for final tuning.


Car has already had all brakes overhauled with uprated pads,on premium tyres and will have 3 inch outlet manifold and exhaust which I will construct from stainless steel with hi flow cat and flowmaster mufflers.It is already on Bilsteins which give me all the handling I want.


I am also going to fit some sort of boost control-much research still needed.


The car is for road use only and 220 ish wheel horsepower should be adequate,with maybe the potential for a little bit more.I am not against forged rods and pistons at a later date if reliability is helped or a little bit more power needed.
I would like something where power comes in smoothly and low down but gets interesting as the revs climb.


Td04 13T's are two a penny over here and are said to be reliable.
However some people seem to favour a T25 flange and something like a GT2560R.
I can buy 8 td04's for the price of one GT250R but if it is a better long term proposition I will do it.


However as noted above I am not going above 300 whp, as for my needs that is more than enough,and smooth power from fairly low to the redline.
I do not need something that hits me up the *** at 5000rpm like an AA Fueler.


Which turbo would best meet my needs and then I can order my manifolds from Sturovo.

You can have a working T25 for $100. That will easily get you your 220whp.

Maybe in the USA but not in Britain.As I said cost is not important the best turbo for my needs is.I trust you favour the T25 flange then?

T25 flanged turbos are very popular with the Miata community. Most of the kits were developed around Garrett turbos, the GT2560 in particular.

There must be some local Nissan guys who have T25 and T28 turbos laying around.

If money is not an object, in my opinion, the 2554R is your best turbo.

My only input is to install the wideband first, or at least in conjunction with the MS3. Not much point in trying to tune without it.

Seems you guys favour a t25 flange then.The GT2554 will cost me about £6oo new as opposed to about £50 for the TD04.
I am awash with rally cars here which is mostly Subaru/Mitsubishi Evo's,there seems to be little Nissan etc although their could be in the drifting community which I have nothing to do with.
The GT2554R I can get is brand new from Garrett,whats the lifespan on one of these as long as I do not run silly boost levels and use 220ish rear wheel horsepower.
Take your point Roger and of course I meant wideband at same time as Megasquirt,wouldn't be a lot of point otherwise.
