TEC3 progress
 
I finally got some time to work on my TEC3 install. Last night I wired for power and all of the sensors. Tonight I wired the coils and said a little prayer and it fired on the first try. I am going to drive it tomorrow as is and make sure there are no gremlins, then I will wire the injectors and should be able to remove the Emanage Ultimate. I am really digging this ECU so far.

im still trying to sort out the mounting for my trigger wheel but i have something in mind.

I've got some of vishnu's old tec 2 maps if you want them for baselines?

Mounting everything was the hard part. I only have about 4 hours in wiring right now and all conections are crimped, heat shrinked, nicely routed and covered in wire loom. I drove it to work today with the TEC controlling ignition and all is well so far.

Wired the injectors in tonight. It fired right up but it is running very poorly. I did take it out and drive a bit, but it really needs help with the tune. I played with it for a while and got it a little better, but I don't feel comfortable driving it far yet. I may get my friend Jeremy (Jeremy S on .net) to help me tune it since he is a TEC2 guru. If anyone has any maps they would like to share, I would also be interested in seeing them. My email is sbrian2 (at) aol.com.

the files i have are for NA 1.8, and 2 for NB 1.8's

there were 1.6 files, i will see if i can still find the page...

Mark, gotta few questions for you. I was planning on and have currently wired the TEC3 parallel with the OEM ECU. I have a zero option car with no power steering or AC, and was wondering if it was worth running parallel or should I go full stand alone?

Also what are your thoughts on running phased vs. sequential injection. I notice in your maps that you are running phased? and have 2 amp inj. peak selected which it says should only be used w/ high ohm injectors wired sequentially? What all is involved in making my car run full sequential if I should go that route? I am running 460cc high ohm injectors FWIW.

I ran that unit full sequential. I added the earlier model cam angle sensor to provide the sync signal. You'll have to check the docs to see how to implement it with the stock CAS (ie. where in the crank rotation the sync needs to occur--you have a big window iirc).

This thing is making me wacky! I can get it to idle, but as soon as I turn the headlights on the thing goes rich to the point that it almost dies? Any ideas?

hell yeah I got ideas!

there's a setting to compensate for battery voltage. it will take some trial and error (lights, brakelights, fans-no A/C, defrost, rolling up the power windows, etc all going at once to drop the batt voltage) to set it, but it adds pulsewidth to the fuel map as system voltage drops since the injectors effectively supply less fuel at lower voltages. same for higher voltages--it drops the PW.

I forget where it is but try a number between 50-150.

Unfortunately in the Tec3 it's a straight linear correction. in other EMS' you can provide a voltage / flow rate curve for the injectors.

I played with that a bit, but I read several places that said not to screw with that too much and from what I saw last night it didn't make it better, but made it worse to increase the number. The TEC manual suggests 65-75 but I had best result at 0. Like I said it is going rich with the lights on, which is opposite from what you say should happen. I have a very low option car with no a/c or p/s so I really dont have much to fight it other than lights and fans. It is making me nutty!

I would run full stand alone. I didn't actually install my TEC-III and plan to redo what was done. It's probably incorrectly setup but functional. Why it's done that way I have no idea!

Obviously using the CAS to trigger the sequential nature of the injection system is the way to go.

tec3 that sbrian2 has doesn't do miata idle valves though. small detail and lots of people dont even use it--you can get pretty far with timing and afr control only.

Actually with a firmware upgrade it should, but maybe I am wrong. It's possible to adapt a GM IAC to the Miata with some work too.

I have not read anywhere about the TEC3 controlling the IAC motor on a Miata. I do know it can be done with the TEC3r. I have done the latest firmware upgrade so maybe I should give EM a call and see if it is possible.

pretty sure the non-R hardware never supported it. unless the degree of firmness you're talking about means adding components to the board ;)

I've seen the GM adaptation work though.

I just looked on the EM website and it states this regarding the latest firmware upgrade:


Support for 2 and 3-wire solenoid type idle speed motors was added to the TEC3r. The three wire idle motors require the use of a small adapter now available. A dedicated pin on the TEC3r drives either a 2-wire idle motor or a 3-wire adapter. The idle speed control software has also been entirely rewritten, making idle control smoother and much more responsive. The new idle speed routines work with all supported idle motors. Idle speed performance is nearly identical with 2 and 3 wire frequency valve and with 4-wire stepper type idle motors. When the firmware is used on a TEC3 standard or 6/12, the new idle system works with the stepper type idle speed motors only. The idle speed routines work similarly to the idle speed control used by OEM auto manufacturers. The new system is simpler to set up and the results are vastly improved over the old system.
So I guess that means no to the TEC controlling the factory IAC motor. :crx:
