Third Time's not a Charm

Cracked my manifold again :crx:

RickA 07-27-2006 06:53 PM

Shit, man that sucks... pics?

brgracer 07-27-2006 07:20 PM

Sorry to hear that man. Excuse to order the new BEGI manifold/DP? :)

Braineack 07-27-2006 07:30 PM

Exactly what I was thinking. I emailed them earlier, going to call tomorrow.

I might ship my old one out to Loki to patch it up.

Braineack 07-28-2006 11:46 AM

I really think my problem is my downpipe. I had to mount it to the transmission to prevent it from rattling againt the lower control arm. Whoever built it did a bad job. This stressed the flex pipe and when I would bolt my turbo/dp in place I really have to force it in. If I can't find a better solution soon I'll reweld it again and rebuild the downpipe.

There aren't really many options for t3 users and I want to fix this ASAP.

"Third Time's not a Charm "

please don't say that, I'm counting on my 3rd diff to hold and the third time to get the car running to last:x:

Forcing parts into place is never a good idea...Hopefully you get-r figured out man

Maybe add a second flex pipe? When I was setting up my larger DP, I originally was going to just weld it without a flex, but I found I needed the extra play. Maybe a second flex pipe would give you the extra play without adding too much cost of redoing the entire DP.

Braineack 07-28-2006 01:09 PM

I'd rather redo it. It's a piece. If I didn't hold it into place by the transmission it hits the control arm. Then it curves bick in towards the transmission and lines up to the cat too close to the PPF. I'm not sure if Begi has a manifold/dp for a t3, if they do I'll get it. If not I'll redo the work.

Braineack 07-28-2006 02:32 PM

Ok I just talked to Corky. His car is in the shop now...he's going to rebuild it from scratch and return it to stock form. He's going to slap his t3 manifold on it and make me a downpipe. I'm going to be sending him my turbo to ensure perfect fitament. He'll most like start producing the downpipes so use 1.6 guys have an awesome source for a Manifold/DP combo. :)

He's still has the manifolds on sale for $290 and I can choose either the mild steel or stainless Downpipe. For $100 more I'm going for the stainless. It's still only going to run me $675, I think that's a steal.

Al Hounos 07-28-2006 02:58 PM

Yeah, and anybody thinking about turboing their miata right now would be stupid to get anything but a begi combo. I wish i had. I'd have an extra $500 in my pocket now.

tylerdurden 07-28-2006 04:31 PM

I really shouldn't right now, but I'm probably going to order on of the last remaining mani's today. Those pieces will be $150 more once the intro pricing runs out!

Braineack 07-28-2006 04:45 PM

He said getting his manifolds in next week so availibility shouldn't be a problem. He has a mock one sitting around so as soon as he get my turbo he'll cut me out a downpipe (within a day), once the manifolds come in he'll ship it all out.

F20turbo 07-30-2006 02:56 AM

I used to have a log manifold on my 1.6L that was very crack prone...man it sure did piss me the hell off...LOL. I took it off about 7 times in a year and had it welded, good times.

Braineack 07-30-2006 02:22 PM

Yeah this was the last straw. It's not hard to pull it out but its a pain in the ass. I know it will do it again due to the stress the exhaust is causing it. So I decided to do it right.

It looks like the new manifold is only going to move the turbo back an inch or two away from the radiator so I'll be able to use my existing intercooler piping...just need rework it a bit.

Braineack 08-03-2006 06:13 PM

OMG the thing is so badly warped I cant get it off the studs anymore. I've removed it 3-4 times before with no problems. I beat with a hammer, went at it with a crow bar and still nothing. I gave up after I got it to move about a .5". If I can't get it off the next try I'm going to cut one of the runners, since I have a relief cut through the entire flange it should seperate into two pieces and come off then......

Fallin Blade 08-03-2006 07:04 PM

Alright mine is in the makng as well! I dont even have the turbo yet?!? I asked him to make me the same one you have Braineack. To tell you the truth i kind of blacked out, talk about impulse! So now just to find the exact turbo as you.

Braineack 08-03-2006 07:34 PM

haha sweet. I told him a few might follow in my footsteps, guess I wasn't wrong.

As long as you can score a t3 you can swap the swingarm with the flange that he's building it for.

Braineack 08-04-2006 04:09 PM

Fallin Blade, he should have them done by Wednesday! He's going to test fit his turbine heat shield on it as well. If it fits (which we are both sure it will) I'm getting that as well.

Fallin Blade 08-04-2006 10:15 PM

Heat shield?!!?!?! I want a heat shield?!?! how come i dont get a heat sheild??? How much is it running you?

Braineack 08-04-2006 11:00 PM

He didn't say...I just mentioned it and he said he'd see if it fit first.

His radiator cover is $30 and his cold air box is $170, so I'm going to assume somewhere in between there.

Looks nice though doesn't it:
