I know the general consensus is that the 5spd is good for around 250rwhp and 6spd for 300rwhp. (Correct if I'm wrong.)

So do those of you making around 300 just use the 6spd out of the MSMs, or are there other options?

Just curious, I saw something about a TII adapter plate, but think that was an older thread.

18psi 11-15-2016 03:14 PM

not many other options that are cheap and easy to do

From my understanding that all takes bellhousing adapters/mods which aren't as cost/time efficient as throwing a 6 speed in there.

You can also get into the transmission itself and make it stronger that way but $$$$

At 300whp on a daily driver I think you need to plan on something other than a stock 5 speed. 6 speeds came in a lot of NB's, not just MSM's. Not sure what you're planning but I don't think you'll find a lot "only car" daily driver Miatas making that much power. You can do it, but you really want to have a plan for a backup method of transportation.

6sp/3.63s here. Gears are a little tightly-spaced for a street car but it works. On flat ground and through neighborhoods I'll take off in 2nd. 6th is ~3500rpm at ~75mph GPS. Right on the bottom of the powerband of my setup (built VVT motor + EFR6758) so I can still squirt around people without a downshift. You'll never find a cheaper option for the same strength unless your friend owns a CNC mill and you value both his time and your time at $0.00/hr.

yes

Thanks for all the responses guys!

I am planning to do a build a realistically I don't see me making or needing a 300whp setup. I was just curious for those that do!

I daily drive a my 5 speed turbo. Probably a bit under 300whp. But a lot of torque low down. Almost always 2nd gear wheelspin

This is my second 5 speed because 3rd gear of the other 5 speed totally sheared of

I dont like the 6speed in a high torque car but im going to do it anyways because thats the only cheap option. Im going to with the 6speed+3.6 ratio

In my 10th anniversary i have an 6speed+3.9 and that is a great option ratio for that car. But thats a completly stock car

Anyone ever run a 4.10 with a 6 speed? I have one in my donor car I plan to run with a obx lsd. is this a good idea for a daily?

18psi 11-16-2016 08:54 PM

not really.

I did, gears are really short.

+1 on 6 speed and 3.63 gears. I love mine

Lots of people have -- that's the stock setup in an MSM. It's pretty terrible in most circumstances, especially once you're above stock power.

aidandj 11-16-2016 11:44 PM

I love 6 speed+3.9 at 200hp.

At 300hp not sure how much I'll like it.

I have a 4.1 kaaz to try with the t5 ratios if I get it in ever.

I have this setup too, but only drive it for work occasionally. The gearing is fine.

The shifter sucks. It's better with the MR shifter, but the gates are still a little too close together left to right. The more I drive it, the less likely I find the wrong gear, though. Practice, practice, practice.

I wish I had a 3.63, but alas I was sent a 3.9. Anyone want to trade an OSGiken w/ 3.63 for a 3.9?
