Thoughts on a twin charged setup
for now im happy with what i have.
I cant stop day dreaming about strapping on bell's cold side supercharger set up to have a twin charged build  Its possible and have seen it done. Im running a 1.6 w/ china 2870, love the mid/top end power but lacks low-end, reason why I wonder about a cold side supercharger ;) Would the SC fill in the gap where theres no low-end? will it become a restriction when the high-end kicks in from the turbo? Pros, cons? Thoughts,concerns,advice..anythings welcome |
yup with a small pulley and the rest is in the tune
|
I say go for it. Corky's new coldside setup is brilliant.
Lots of pros. Cons will be in the tune. Sorry I can't help more. |

Would the SC fill in the gap where theres no low-end? Attachment 192670 105ft.lbs discrepancy at 4000rpm. I bet just a turbo swap would get you 60% of that (VVT is 30%, 1.8 is the rest). If you're hellbent on the twincharging idea, there's a lot of things to overcome. I think you'd struggle with compressor surge since the supercharger is already feeding a lot of air into the motor, and the turbo will try to compete with it (and lose). You'd need to figure out a way to open up the wastegate and keep it open until you're beyond the surge point, and be able to do that smoothly and consistently. The better way to go may be the other way - use a small turbo like a 2256 or a 2554 and a big-ass Rotrex like a C38-74. Use the small turbo to produce the power down low and then run twin/triple 44mm wastegates to uncork the manifold and let the Rotrex breathe at high RPM. Again, you have to figure out how to open the wastegates wide enough to make it work. Or you could just spend half the cash, swap one part (the turbo) and see absolutely huge gains for very little effort. ;) |
well sounds like that settles that....

Again, you have to figure out how to open the wastegates wide enough to make it work. I would prefer using a large turbo instead of the rotrex but I like difficult installs. Either way you should also have some sort of bypass on the intake side of things so that the rotrex (or larger turbo) isn't trying to blow thru the smaller turbo compressor. |
You want lowend, midrange, and topend?
Do I even need to say it? v8 swap |

Do I even need to say it? v8 swap Sav- Upgrading the turbo to a genuine garret piece is something that will be happening. Surge is something i'd like to take care of also, How about a Anti-surge housing. Running dual BOV is something i may have to do also for this. One before the throttle body and after the throttle body. This also helps make the SC sound badass ;) |
i make more torque than you... until 5k :)

I still wanna do this setup in time. Its not as hard as its made out to be and tuning isnt that big a deal either. It just takes money and time
|
Better idea. If you have the funds, patience, etc..Go compound.
Notice I said *IF* this is just a idea being thrown out there, lol! [Flame Suit ACTIVATE] |
You're making 260whp?
On a built engine and a GT2870? If you want low end, get a VVT 1.8, get AF/ARTech parts and a 2560. You can make 311whp on that turbo, and spool comes in low. I give you a 99% chance of abandoning any twincharging or compound setup, after wasting a lot of money. |

324rwhp silly :giggle: But yeah, compound/twin charge people have a terrible success rate. I change my position. Go ahead and try it. Either way. When you get frustrated and part it out, I'll lowball you for some parts. :D |
I never fail at what I try Nagase

Erin what are you talking about???? A lot of people have had great success with twin's and compound set ups...I think it's a great idea.

A lot more people look at the pile of money they've put into it and the years they haven't driven their car and give up. This is the best build I've seen on it: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/cust...bo-set-up.html It took him two years to make it work, even with mad skills, and then he ended up selling it directly afterwards. There's elegance to simplicity. |
Its cool to see the setup on that 300zx because i have seen that car racing in alot of videos and its absolutely insane how fast it is. however i dont think all that is needed in a miata, put a precision dual ceramic ball bearing billet wheel turbo on thee and the spool difference will be unbelievable. my good friends evo spooled a 6262 journal bearing billet wheel turbo 1200 rpms sooner then his garret gt35r and the 35r is ball bearing and smaller. those billet wheels work very well. id bet you could see full boost by 4500 rpms with a precision 5857 bb billet wheel and that turbo could swallow the gt28 whole.
