Throttle Body swap???
 

Quick, is there a way to swap an auto 1.6l or a 1.8L throttle to a 1.6L motor, without changing ecu??

I have a weird feeling that the answers going to be NO, but some of the people on this site have figure out new miata DIY tricks... such as the COP. Figured I would ask.

without an aftermarket ecu, you will see returns from the swap.

Quick, what are you looking to get from the swap?

The auto or 1.8l cars use the variable tps for something...so installing the on-off 1.6 Manual TPS on a later car probably wouldn't work. Even if it did, it's sorta a step backwards.

If you want to use a 1.8 variable TPS on a 1.6 car...assuming you made an adapter plate to bolt the 1.8TB onto the 1.6 intake manifold...then yes I believe there is a way to wire it so the 1.6 ecu doesn't have a fit. To the best of my knowledge, the oem 1.8 TPS has a "switch" built into it along with the variable output. I know I used a 1.8 TPS on my 1.6 Link ECU...

Again, not sure what you'd get out of it.

A 1.8 TPS does not directly attach to the 1.6 throttle body.

Yea I wanted to know if I could use either an auto or 1.8 on my 1.6 without the ecu flipping out



my two ideas are first I can get S-afc normally cheap, and use that to tune for fuel when I do my DIY instead of a FMU(which I don't like) but need a Variable TPS to tune with and then second would be when I finally save up for and aftermarket ECU most likely MS, tuning with TPS would be greatfully

My one question would be if you can use a 1.8 on a 1.6 ecu then why does FM sell an adptar to use the 1.6L TB on a 1.8 swap??

Good question. Probably because the 1.8 TPS connector is different than then 1.6 TPS connector...you'd have to cut and splice the correct wires together. Not a big deal though, cause you have to do that a few times when you wire in the Link, etc.

OR...I did have two TPS's that I used on my 1.8 (and for a time on my modified manual 1.6 TB): an 1.8 OEM sensor and another I found in a box in the garage...one had the WOT/idle switch built in and another didn't (just had variable output). Both were the same brand, same connector, different part numbers, ya know? I could be mistaken on which was the OEM TPS.

I made a 1.8 variable tps work on my 1.6 manual throttle body. It required cutting the throttle shaft shorter, tack welding the spider-thing that drives the sensor to the shaft (stole this off the TB i got the sensor from), and making a .125 thick mounting adapter/spacer. Or you can find a 1.6 automatic TB with the OEM TPS for sale and just bolt that right up...assuming the automatic TB has the idle switch built in.

I put a 1.6L auto TB and TPS on my 1.6. No issues, just get the plug from the auto wiring harness and match the wire colors, you wind up with one extra wire which is the variable TPS signal. I ran that wire to my eManage and things work great. The TPS signal out is from 0.28 min to 2.31 volts max on mine.
