Tial 38 question
Ok so I had a major boost leak before I lit my car on fire. I just got everything off and went straight to the WG. Its a Tial 38. I looked at the online technical section on their website and it looks like there is suppose to be a valve seat in between the flange and the valve to seal it properly.
Well my WG there is about a 1-2mm gap in between the flange and Valve and I dont see a valve seat piece anywhere. Is this gap suppose to be there? If not Im guessing this is my boost leak. |
It is PHYSICALLY impossible to have a boost leak at the external wastegate, you may have an exhaust leak, not boost.
Look somewhere else. |
there's an aluminum ring that seats at the bottom of the piston near the inlet flange. maybe it's stainless. in any case, it's shown here on the right:

Let me know if you need one. I have em for $25.

I think they call it the fire ring around the forums.

Look somewhere else. That's really just semantics.. We all knew what he meant, but you had to try and be the smart one of the bunch. As for the valve seat.. this is what it looks like.. http://www.gotbends.com/images/valve_seat.jpg It sits in the recess, like one would assume. Historically, I've always had trouble with the 38mm wastegates and leaks, gasket blowouts, and other assorted errata. I swore to myself after the last time, that i would shell out for a 44 next time. My best recommendation is to find a thick copper wastegate gasket. I used to have a source for those, but the guy went out of business or disappeared, who knows. I am sure someone on the internet sells one.. |
errr nester, how about just NO gasket? works great for me.
|
Yes, no gasket. It works good sometimes..
I know TiAL will hate to hear this.. but the one knockoff TiAL 38 I had.. was true as could be... I've had a couple real TiAL 38's that didn't meet the straight edge test.... Nothing a little time with the belt sander couldn't fix.. As long as both surfaces are true, rock out with the no gasket fix.. :hammer: |
Its sad to say but the Tial gaskets do suck. The Turbonetics Deltagate gaskets that have a fire ring have been flawless for me and my buddies. ATP has em.
|
I couldn't find the firering gaskets at ATP. Though I hate EIPtuning, they're local and had a good price:
