Is it time for a CHRA exchange?
GT2560R with less than 3k miles on it. Sometimes, at idle mostly and usually only when warm, you can hear it start to...cry almost. A very faint whine, but last time I checked the blades weren't touching the housing. Also it has some play which was definitely not there when I installed it. More play than I would like to see.
.040" restrictor, so I would assume its getting sufficient oiling. How much oiling does a BB turbo really need? Has anyone else had a Garrett crap out so soon? This seems a little ridiculous to me. I plan on coughing up the 500 for the CHRA exchange but I'm definitely not happy about this. inb4 "get efr peasant." |
You're certain it's the turbo? This isn't common. My Garrett is very, very hurt (damaged turbine + old CHRA from when I still had CHRA/turbine bolt issues), has a large amount of shaft play, and it still spins free and makes boost without any odd noises.

i'm running a used 2560 since april above 15psi, and i got nothing close to the sound you're speaking of
video maybe? |
For a while I didn't think it was. The whine changes in pitch according to rpm too. Its coming from the turbo area, and there's nothing else that spins there but I'm going to give it another listen with my electronic det cans next time I hear it and make sure its the turbo. It seems to pop up after I've been driving around for 20+ minutes, or coming off the freeway.
It still spins free and no difference in spool. Just the noise is worrying me. EDIT: Actually I'm wrong. It's silent at idle but if I raise the rpm by the slightest amount, it starts crying. |

I just thought I'd add.
I checked the turbo for shaft play the other day. 4 days ago. Hasn't made the noise since. does not compute. |
