Tips for passing emissions...

Ok, so I failed the emissions test about a week ago. I got a new "cat" put in and went to get it inspected again and it still failed. I just leaned out the tune a lot and am going to take the car tomorrow to reinspect it.

I have all the proper emissions passing parts, Cat, EGR pipe, etc. but I was wondering if yall know any tips for helping pass emissions?

1995 miata... The set-up is a Hyrda EMS, Garret GT2860 turbo... and I don't know what else I would post that would be relevant for this?

probably will help if you told us on what you failed on.

I remember Scott saying you cant be too lean because it will raise NOx levels. If I was in your shoes, id slip the guy a 50 on top of whatever the inspection costs and have him run his own car.

step 1: move

step 2:

step 3: profit

don't go too advanced on timing, you'll fail for NOx

retard ignition and have the parts of the map where they'll be testing the car set to 14.7 AFR
It's a balancing act.

Last time I flunked in IL (just barely) I missed all three test criteria by a bit. I only had a a month reprieve to get the car "clean" before they would pull my plate so I didn't want to take any chances. I disconnected my BEGI RRFPR (they used to do a chassis dyno test in IL), put in new plugs (stock heat range, but tight gap at .030), seafoamed the TB, put in a new O2 sensor (original was 16yrs old) set the timing to exactly 10 degrees BTDC and passed with flying colors. Drove immediately home and re-connected the RRFPR too!

Dude... you don't even know how many places I tried to do that at. I even offered a 120... no one would do it. I failed the low speed and high speed test.

Post your emissions pass/fail details.

Thats really gay, but whenever I had to do it it never failed. Usually you have to be really serious, and mature. If they suspect you to be a guy whos gonna go and tell a whole buncha people they wont do it for you because thats gonna put em all in prison tomorrow.

But you passed anyway so all is well.

It's so fucking fantastic of you not to share why you failed and what you did to solve your dilemma. Thanks for posting at Mazda-speed.com

Lol... sorry guys. I have been swamped at work and haven't really had time to get on the forums.

I'm looking at the inspection report sheet and I'll post what I failed.

I can't tell exactly what it is... the print on the sheet was cut off on the far left, down the whole page.

On the high speed run on the part I failed, the standard PPM was "1123" and I measured "2884". I failed the exact same one on the low speed as well. The standard for the low speed was "1242" and I measured "2582".

I passed everything else... the only thing that was changed was, the AFR was leaned out. It was running really rich before.

Sorry for the delayed response and lack of information on the failed inspection.

There is a thread last Aug/Sept covering how to pass emmisions test.

Both on a MS and a Link.
