Toyota COPS..Volt drop and capacitors???

Ive read that the stock miata ECU sends too much dwell to the toyota COPs and that the toyota cops draw a lot more current than the miata ones...

Q1)Has anyone had any cops fail due to excess dwell?

Q2) i am running an emanage blue to control my engine...has the emanage /cops been proven to work without issue?

Q3) i see on the dwell tables that at lower voltages the cops can withstand longer dwells, so why then do people add caps to the loom to bolster the voltage? i would have thought that allowing the volt drop would be beneficial to the cops?

Q4) i am thinking of doing the crystal chip mod that will drop my fuel by10% at idle and i suppose it will drop the dwell by 10% too...would this be a worthwhile mod to get the dwell down? I will retune the emenage blue on the dyno to suit the altered fuel/timing maps that the crystal mods does....

cheers guys.

You can't run COPs without a circuit to amplify the trigger signals being sent from the EMB to the coils.

anyone done this? can you buy the amplifier or is it s "solder it yourself" deal?

would keeping the ignitor in the system and feeding the cops from the ignitor solve the issue? (kinda like a big power transistor?)

You don't need a big transistor. The coils have them build in.
Yes, you can blow the COPs on too much dwell. Most are current limmiting and heat up when they get to much dwell.
The caps are there to avoid big messy voltage spikes on the cars 12v line. Yes, they worsen the spark little but keep you from other kinds of problems.

Get a proper engine management system. Then you gain full control and it enables you to run these COP's.

i know...i got the emanage blue just before the Megasquirt had sorted all its early issues...the emanage/O2 clamp system has been running faultlessly since 2006...

may do a Megasquirt install next year and add COPS then.

i just have that bad feeling that i'm gonna need to replace the leads soon and the chances of a coil failing in the next year are high now that i have seen the COPS mod! ;)

Did you actualy check your AFR's? Can you adjust your ignition timing where it needs adjustments? If not, this would be the right time to upgrade and gain dwell-control. You can get a COP system once you installed an EMS.

There is a vendor/sponsor that was selling COP kits with some dwell adjustment.
