Tuning Help - Poping @ WOT and 12 psi

1 Attachment(s)
Under WOT and boost controller set to 12 psi. I get poping noises coming from the tail pipe, and slight hesitation during those pops.

@ 8psi - I get no pops @ wot
@ 10 psi - I get one / two once in a while @ wot
@ 12 psi - Lots of pops at wot

I am still a beginner in tuning, so I'm not sure what that is. Any ideas what that is or next steps to find out what it is?

I logged a run, and nothing seems out of the ordinary.

Here is the log with the knock sensor and timing

Sounds like you're too rich or you're dealing with spark blow out. Your knock sensor would show it missing you would think but maybe not. What AFR are you seeing during the popping and what is your spark plug gap at?

rippledabs 06-14-2008 02:07 PM

at 12 psi, the datalog shows 11.5 A/F

I havn't check the spark plugs yet.

I should replace the plugs,

Any ideas which plugs should I get, and where can I get them?

Also what gap do you recommend?

Advanced auto has NGK i believe. BKR7Es or BKR6Es depending on use. 6's should be cold enough for you if its a street car. They come pregapped at .035 I believe. I suggest leaving them at that gap. If you continue to have spark blow out issues close the gap up more to more like .025".

is the V-Power Plugs ok too? Advance doesn't have the regular ones in stock, and they cost the same.

cjernigan 06-14-2008 02:36 PM

Call around i'm sure you can find them elsewhere if necessary. I only recommend the BKR7&6Es because I know the heat range. If you can get a plug of similar heat range just set the gap to .035 and make sure they're all the same and try it that way.

What's your spark plug gap?

("i don't know" is not a good reply, here)

i don't know :noob:

i assumed the last owner gapped them good, but i shouldn't assume anymore. This guy did so many things wrong.

Then check.. your plugs may be just fine, or they could not be either way pulling plug wires off and yanking a few plugs out can take up to 10 min if working slow.

i lost my gapper, was going to pick one up while i pay the $8 to replace the plugs.

Never trust the previous owner of a car to have done anything right.

got new plugs gapped to ~.030

works great. no more popping at WOT and Full Boost.

Thanks for the help!

But every once in a while I get a loud pop when I lift throttle.

Is the reason because the ecu can't react in time to my liftoff and goes into super rich condition?

Anyway to tune it out?

cjernigan 06-15-2008 08:33 PM

It's popping when it goes from super rich to dead lean I bet. Bet it sounds like a race car with open exhaust. I don't know the link but with MS you can tune that out using overrun activation times and the lowest KPA row in your VE table.
